Best Ways To Wear The Neon Color Trend When You’re Over 40

I’m going to be cautiously optimistic that spring is just around the corner. Maybe it’s time to wear something a little brighter to lift our mood, especially during these chaotic times. The way that I’m choosing to do just that is to dive into some new spring fashion trends and one of my favorites is radiant neon tones. I’ve been seeing them everywhere in my beloved stores and they were definitely a sight to be seen on the runways. Let’s take a look at the neon color trend and explore how they can work for women over 40.

Neon Color Trend On The Runway For Spring 2022

This was a big theme that we saw all over the spring summer runways. Many runways shows including Versace, Prada and Richard Quinn were among those to feature bold and the bright neon colors. Highlighter yellow, electric blue and orange and super bright teals and hot pinks were among the colors that shone high on the runways and will beautifully translate into any wardrobe of women over 40. And although some of the runway silhouettes may be a little too daring for some of us, there are tons of ways to rock this trend.

How To Wear Neon Colors

It’s always so fun to bring out bright colors like the neon trend after all the cold, drab days of winter are behind us. This trend is coming to us at the perfect time, considering the last few years have given us a lot of down times. Incorporating this trend in your wardrobe is like a breath of fresh air. You can take inspiration from the runways or you can put your own spin on it by adding your own flair and personal touches.

One of my favorite ways to sport this trend is to add a blazer or jacket to your existing outfit. An electric blue blazer like this Topshop option is a universally flattering silhouette. The electric blue color would go easily with a neutral colored pair of pants or pair of jeans. You could also go bold and pair it with an equally bright neon pair of wide leg pants; I’m thinking orange or yellow.

Wedding season will be coming up soon, so now is a good time to start looking for your guest attire if you have any upcoming wedding events. I’ve always felt that dressing up as a wedding guest is an opportunity to look your best and trying new trends is a great way to do so. Try this chic and sexy satin slip dress, also in electric blue, from Express. You could also try this sleeveless shift dress in a beautiful, bright neon pink.

I’ve been heavily into the wide leg pants trend this season and it has not just been wide leg jeans. I love to combine trends and the wide leg pants trend in bright neon are a fun way to do so. I found these wide leg cut-out pants from H&M in a neon orange. The bright color can be a little much for some, but for those willing to make a bold fashion choice, it’s a great way to go.

If you want to try something more basic for every day, you can try a simple lightweight sweater in a bright neon yellow. I like this slouchy sweater option from Macy’s. It is an easy way to incorporate the neon trend into your spring wardrobe. Another easy and affordable option is this sleeveless button front top. The pink color is beautiful and feminine, making this top a good choice if you will be returning to the office and want a statement piece to help make your debut post-pandemic debut.

Best Ways To Wear Neon Colors: Expert Style Tips

  • Pull from runway for inspiration. I know a trend like this can be daunting if you are used to a neutral palette. So study the runway shows and take bits and pieces that resonate with you back to your closet. I know some of the runway looks can be over-the-top, but an accessory here or a silhouette there can work wonderfully for the everyday woman over 40.
  • Don’t be shy. Neon and bright color trends are definitely a statement look. If you want to give it a try, then go all in! I think many of us are ready to hang up our quarantine clothes and make a fashion statement as we start to step out again. This is a great way to start.
  • Try to invest in some nicer pieces. Sometimes it’s fun to get the steal instead of the splurge on certain trends, but I say take caution with this one.
  • If you go too inexpensive with this trend, then the items that you choose can be in danger of looking cheap. You want to make sure the tailoring and fabric are a decent quality, so the fit looks nice. You don’t want bunching in the wrong places or bad stitching with this trend.
