Cozy and Chic: The Return of Wrap Coats and Capes for Fall and Winter

We’re settling into the fall season, and many of us are starting to feel that first sweep of cool weather. With a bit of chill in the air, I know I’m reaching for sweaters and lightweight coats again. As we look for more trends to carry us through the chilly months, I’ll admit—I didn’t see this one coming. Wrap coats, capes, ponchos and oversized wraps are back for fall.

Wrap Coats, Capes, Wraps and Ponchos

So, I hope you still have one or two buried in the back of your closet from season’s past. If not, no worries. These styles have a strong presence both in stores and online this year, so shopping this trend should be fairly easy. Let’s review some fun options to shop if you are looking for wrap coats, capes, and ponchos this fall.

How To Wear Wrap Coats For Fall

Wrap coats were all the rage about ten years ago. I had one in white and one in black. Now that the silhouette is back in style—and since I’ve unfortunately donated my old ones—I’m on the hunt for a new one to add to my wardrobe. This time around, I’ll keep the design classic and high-end, and I’ll definitely hang on to it.

Banana Republic Italian Wool-Cashmere Wrap Coat, $550

For a splurge piece, I adore this Italian Wool Cashmere Wrap coat. I personally love the Blue Catamaran color, but as I said, I’d keep it classic and stick with the golden brown. The oversized fit and peaked lapel are traditional and chic —and no matter the decade, this coat will never go out of style.

Aritzia The Portfolio Double-Faced Coat – Luxe (Re)Wool, $350

For a mid-range price option, look at the Portfolio Double-Faced Coat from Artizia. It comes in a great range of neutral color options. has a classic closer it to the body and the long length will provide warmth all the way down to your legs.

Women’s Simply Vera Vera Wang Drape Collar Overcoat, $89.99

Finally for a value price wrap coat, I found this Simply Vera Drape Collar Coat. With a $90 price tag, it is an easy one to try if you’re unsure. I love the neutral plaid, and the fact that it’s fully lined—a detail that’s surprisingly rare in many affordable fall and winter coats.

How To Wear Capes For Fall

I have always had a tough time figuring out how and where to wear capes. Perhaps it’s because where I live in the Midwest, if it’s cold enough for outerwear, then you probably need a full-on coat. However, that has never stopped me from trying a trend I’m curious about. So, I’ve found a few cape options that would work perfectly for the early fall season.

twill Trench Cape fall trend fountainof30
Loft Twill Trench Cape, $55

The first is a Twill Trench Cape that would work now if you are in a transitional season or all winter if you are in a climate that doesn’t have temperatures that get too frigid. You can wear it just like a classic trench—with just about everything. It’s a good piece to add to your closet if you want something you can wear repeatedly.

H&M Rib-Knit Cape with collar

Zara Wool Cape with Asymmetrical Collar
Zara Wool Cape with Asymmetrical Collar, $69.90

If you are looking for something more relaxed, I would go with a knit cape. These are the kind that graced my closet all those years ago. Two neutral and very versatile options are the Rib Knit Cape from H&M (with an oversized collar) and the Wool Cape with Asymmetrical Collar from Zara. Both are thin-knit, casual and comfortable — and under $100, so the price is also budget friendly.

How To Wear Oversized Wraps For Fall

I love that wraps are back in style. They give you a great reason to wrap yourself in a luxurious fabric that is not just reserved for sitting on your couch at home.

I found a couple of options that are beautiful for fall, starting with the Blanket Duster Wrap. I would advise getting this one in chocolate brown, which is a huge color trend this fall. It’s a rich neutral that you can wear with any other color in your closet — even black.

For a more affordable option, here is a more subtle wrap that is smaller and lighter weight. The color options offer both neutrals as well as a really beautiful rose quartz pink if you want something ultra feminine.

Sweater Bib Poncho, $48

Finally, I found this option that is kind of a wild card. It’s a rib knit poncho that is perfect for layering on top or underneath. It’s ideal for anyone who loves the idea of this trend but doesn’t like big showstopper pieces. This is something you can keep on rotation in your closet and always find fun, new ways to wear it.

Expert Style Tips

  • Shop your closet. Wrap coats, capes and ponchos were popular several years back. So, look at what you already have in your closet. Many of us will still have some styles hiding in storage or in our closet that we can pull out and wear. Even if you want to get something new, give your old styles a try first to see if you still like this trend for your personal style.
  • Neutral is key. If you lived through this trend the first time and are ready to revisit it, go for an elevated style in a neutral tone. I’m always a fan of gray, camel, and chocolate brown. You can also try black, but I think sometimes that comes across as a little harsh and witchy. However, when it comes down to color choices, go with what makes you feel good!
  • They make great layering pieces. Capes and wraps make excellent layering pieces. Pair them with thin knits, button front tops, and denim jackets. Layering them provide both additional warmth and interesting visuals. This is definitely a style trick I’d suggest trying if you decide to try this trend for fall.

Whether you invest in a luxe wrap coat or pull an old favorite from your closet, this trend offers the perfect balance of comfort and sophistication. Wraps, capes, and ponchos are cozy, flattering, and undeniably stylish—just what we need to stay warm all season long.
