5 Expert Tips To Help Transition Your Wardrobe From Summer To Fall

transition your wardrobe

Fall is one of our favorite times of the year. We get to pull out all our favorite jackets, sweaters, boots and more because it’s (almost) autumn. It’s time to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall.

However, depending on where you live, you probably have a few more weeks of summer weather to deal with, and accordingly the thought of wearing anything heavier than a t-shirt doesn’t appeal. But you can bring a little bit of autumnal excitement into your pre-fall wardrobe as you put away the linen and maxi-dresses and get out the cashmere. Here’s how to transition well this year.

How to Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

Play With Proportions

Keep things breezy with shorts but pair them with a long sleeved button-up in fall colors with them (such as the Paige plaid style with a unique shoulder detail), or try suede booties with a sundress and vest.

Vests Are Key

We probably mention vests in every transitional wardrobe article, but that’s because they really are the perfect layering piece when the seasons are changing. Throw one over a summer dress or tank and cropped pants/culottes to add a third piece that makes everything feel more autumnal. This Haute Hippie cargo vest would work for literally every season, thrown over a white tee and jeans in warm weather, with olive and black for cold weather, and everything in between.

Put Away The Sandals

Even if it’s warm enough to wear them, changing things up with ankle boots, sneakers, oxfords, brogues, or basically anything that isn’t open toe will make your summer time gear feel more appropriate for September. The Nisolo James oxford in almond is a great leg-lengthening option that is light enough for summery styles but will work well into fall.

Change Your Color Palette

Some things like feel like summer, such as pastels and tropical hues, or any coral or turquoise jewelry. Switch to neutrals like camel and tan, or start adding fall shades like mustard, olive, burnt orange, rust, and similar classics. Deep violet and lapis blue will also be major colors this fall, and something like these Vince crop pants could be a really versatile transitional piece. Wear them with a white tee and sneakers or loafers now, and a black turtleneck and boots once it gets colder out! We love this orange Jacquemus blouse as a way to mix in some fall color.

Switch To Fall Makeup

Even if it’s ninety degrees outside, switching your daily lipstick or nail hue to a trendy fall shade – or a classic berry – can make all the difference. Start off the season with a new lip color. We adore YSL Rouge Pur in Rose Stiletto for a great natural berry. Or try a nail shade like one of the two colors in the Marc Jacobs fall runway set.

How do you embrace the new season? What do you currently do to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall? Already missing summer, or are you excited to bring out all your fall ensembles?
