Thanksgiving with my family is always casual. So I like to wear something that is comfortable and practical, yet stylish all at the same time. A chic Thanksgiving outfit sets the holiday season off on the right foot. After all, it’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, a little wine and a lot of food. One way to stay comfy while prepping (and eating) is with a wide leg pair of jeans, a T-shirt (in case you feel warm in the kitchen), and a colorful belted cardigan to wrap yourself up in to look festive and presentable at the dinner table. This look offers all of that, and it includes basic pieces you will wear over and over again. Style it with all high-end pieces (on the left), go with low-priced look-alikes (on the right), mix them up for a high-low Thanksgiving outfit for women over 50.
The Colorful Print Belted Cardigan
The star of this Thanksgiving outfit is this classic zig-zag knit Missoni wool-blend cardigan. It has a gorgeous multicolor knit with metallic yarns woven in. The black border and sash belt make it very flattering. You can definitely dress this sweater up (think black pants and a glittery tank), wear it to the office (with tan trousers or a pencil skirt and a turtleneck), or dress it down with faded jeans. Additionally, his cardigan will look smashing in the summer with crisp white pants. Have I convinced you that you will get your cost-per-wear out of this sweater and that it is worth $1,960? Agreed, it’s still a hefty investment, so you may opt for this slightly funky Mother mixed-knit fringed belted cardigan on sale for $158.99. It is a heavier sweater so you won’t wear it all year round, but it is super fun and works just as well for this Thanksgiving outfit.

The White Elbow Sleeve T-shirt
Even though there is a chill in the air, if you plan on being in the kitchen to cook or to help out, a short sleeve tee shirt is the perfect base layer. A T-shirt is a simple hot-flash remedy too! Then you can top it off with your colorful cardigan for the rest of the party. This Rosetta Getty ribbed cotton-jersey top is gorgeous and fits beautifully with its elbow length sleeves for $325. But you can also pick up this Caslon ballet neck cotton-modal tee for only $17.50.
The Wide Leg Jeans
I may sound like a broken record, but I think every woman over 50 needs a pair of high waist wide leg jeans. They are extremely comfortable and they fit better than your old 90s jeans. Under the fitted tee and belted sweater wide legs balance off this look. Invest in these amazing wide leg jeans from The Row for $790 and you will wear them every week, if not every day this season. You may like to look for denim with stretch and jeans do not. But I have found 100% cotton wide leg jeans to be very comfortable. The key is to buy them a little loose in the waist. Is $790 too much to spend? Then try out the trend with these 90s baggy jeans from H&M for only $34.99.
Classic Penny Loafers
I am not the classic penny loafer type, but I like how they work under a pair of wide leg pants. It is a more modern way to wear wide leg pants instead of with towering platforms (which is also a trend that is back that you may like to try). The classic loafer flats ground the wide legs and ensure you will be comfortable! Invest in a pair of Saint Laurent Le Loafers for $795 or (wait a minute, aren’t those Bass Weejuns?) Oh no, they are super soft leather and have a YSL logo embossed on the side. Well, you can still get G.H. Bass Weejuns for $155 and save $640.
Pop of Color Shoulder Bag In Orange
An orange shoulder bag will give you a nice pop of color appropriate for Thanksgiving, and truly all year long. This chic Loewe Puzzle leather bag in orange is the ideal medium size and shape to carry everything you need over your shoulder. Add it to your it bag collection for $2,350. But if you have a better plan for that amount of cash, Zara comes to the rescue with this shoulder bag that is the same size in orange for only $49.90 (and it’s vegan!).
Thanksgiving Outfit Styling Tips
- Stylish and Comfortable. You can do both! Build your outfit around one outstanding piece (in this case the cardigan sweater) and make sure you are comfortable in all the other pieces under it.
- Invest in Versatility. The holidays are coming and so whatever you buy high-end or low-priced, consider how often you will wear it. I choose items in this Thanksgiving outfit that can be worn time and time again.
- Consider the Venue. Are you the cook on Thanksgiving, will you be the helpful visitor or are you going out to a nice restaurant? If you are the cook you may want to wear all wash and wear pieces, and if you are going out you can wear black pants instead of the faded jeans in this outfit.
- Layers Rein Supreme. A cardigan or jacket that can be removed in case you feel warm is key to comfort on Thanksgiving day. You want to enjoy the day and not worry about your outfit.
