How To Style a Black Quilted Jacket Outfit High Or Low

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of black quilted jackets in the stores that remind me of the ones we wore in the 80s and 90s. This is especially true of the boxier or oversized versions that are collarless and almost look like a coat lining. I have to admit, I still like the look! Besides, these quilted jackets are perfect for fall and its changing weather. That’s why I put together this black quilted jacket outfit for women over 50 and styled it both high and low. You can choose high-end high-priced pieces, low-priced look-alike items, or mix them all up! That’s what high low styling is all about.

The Black Quilted Jacket Outfit

Sure, you can wear a quilted jacket with a t-shirt and jeans or pants, but I like one with a slim-fitting midi skirt. Why? It balances off the boxiness of the jacket and creates a longer line. A cream-colored skirt is chic, but any color will work. A pair of lug sole Chelsea boots keeps the outfit casual and (most important) comfortable! Add a complimentary neutral colored soft camel handbag, and you are good to go.

The Black Quilted Jacket

Lightweight quilted jackets come in other colors, but I still like it best in black because it looks a little more edgy, urban and even a bit elegant! Layer a black long sleeve t-shirt under the jacket. It will keep you cool and comfortable while the weather is still somewhat mild. This Lafayette 148 New York Gilbert Long Sleeve Top for $398 is beautifully made and a perfect top that you can dress up or down. But if you don’t want to invest so much, this Caslon Long Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt will work (but may not last as long) for only $29.

The Long and Lean Midi-Skirt

To dress up the look and to balance the proportions of the boxy jacket, a slim fitting midi-skirt will make you look longer and leaner. I am in love with this gorgeous Envelope 1976 Longoria Leather Midi Skirt for $750. It has jean-skirt styling with back patch pockets and a front slit for ease in movement. But If the soft cream leather seems too luxurious (along with its luxury price tag), this Reiss Alora Wrap Front Midi Skirt in cream viscose fabric is now only $119. It will give you the same look for less. And I love the buckle detail.

The Classic Black Chelsea Boots

Nothing beats a fabulous pair of boots for fall, and these Gianvito Rossi Chester Leather Chelsea Boots for $1,145 are the crème de la crème. They are all black, made of Italian leather and have lug rubber soles. These boots are a great investment piece since you can wear them with jeans, pants and skirts … for the next 10 years or more! However, you can get these Caslon Miller Water Resistant Chelsea Boots for only $64.99. They also have a lug sole, do not have the all black look, but will save you $1,080!

The Soft Camel Hand Bag

This soft and slouchy drawstring leather bag adds brightness and interest to this outfit. Its ample size will hold a lot of essentials. Beauty has a price, and this amazing Loewe Flamenco Leather Clutch in camel is $2,950. For a much more practical price you can get this Botkier Hudson Pebbled Leather Hobo, now on sale for $178.80. It is the same color and size. No it is not as exciting (at all) but it does have a shoulder strap.

Quilted Jacket Styling Tips

1. Wear It Like A Cardigan. A lightweight liner-style quilted jacket like this will replace your oversize cardigan and give your wardrobe a boost. Wear it over jeans, pants, skirts, dresses and more. It can be worn over a blazer or under a long wool coat. Or try belting it to for a more shapely silhouette. Oversized quilted jackets are perfect over workout wear and leggings, too. The options are endless.
2. Play With Proportions. The newer quilted jackets are oversized, but they work over almost everything you wear. I like the contrast of closer to the body clothing underneath, such as slim-fitting jeans, skirts and sweater dresses. However they work over flare pants, slouchy pants and full skirts too. Go can also go with an all-oversized outfit when it comes to quilted jackets.
3. Contrast Your Styling. The quilted jacket is casual, utilitarian and resembles a hunting jacket. But when you pair it with a silk blouse, velvet pants or even a sequin skirt in the same color (that’s why I like it in black) it can pass as evening wear! Or wear it with soft fleece joggers, over your workout wear or with super faded denim for an everyday look.
