This is probably because we know from our past experience (even when we were younger) how trying on multiple swimsuits and seeing yourself in the wrong styles can be very disheartening. But when you do find a suit that is right for you, it can make you feel great (or at least better). At our age we aren’t looking for perfection, be we do want comfort and style and to look the best we can. So how do you find the best swimsuits for women over 50, and where do you begin?

First, let’s take a look at some of the most flattering swim suit styles. I will show you what to look for to get the best fit for your body-type and where to shop for the best selections.
Swimsuits With Ruching and Tummy Control
I found a new swimsuit recently, and this was the style that worked for me. I have worn two-piece suits all my life, but this year felt I needed a one-piece just because I am not happy with how the skin on my midsection looks (dry and with age spots) and want to cover it. The tummy control panels and ruching are an added bonus to smooth and nip in my waistline. I look a few pounds lighter instantly. This is a very flattering style for most women over 50.

Tankinis
Tankinis are a great solution, giving you the coverage of a one-piece with the comfort and convenience of a two-piece. These suits are a wonderful option if you are either long or short waisted. They are also customizable. You can purchase the right size for the top and bottoms separately to fit you perfectly. Choose from loose and flowy tops to more fitted styles, along with the bottoms of your choice.
Swim Shorts and Bike Shorts
Wear swim boy shorts or even bike shorts with a tankini top to add as much coverage as you like to your leg and hip areas.
High-Waisted Bikinis
String bikinis may be a thing of your past, but you may like to try a high-waisted bottom paired with a well-structured top that has a lot of support. This two-piece suit style gives you more coverage than a tiny bikini and the look is quite glamorous and a little bit retro.
Swim Dresses and Skirt Suits
Did you ever wish you could just wear a dress into the pool, lake or ocean like our ancestors? Well you can, because they make those too! Feel confident wearing a swimdress or swimskirt with the top of your choice at the beach or pool.

Whether you are large or small busted, swimwear with underwire or molded cups is key. Larger busted women need the support and smaller chested women may like the additional shaping to balance their figure.
Bold Prints
While black, dark colored or jewel-tone solid colored suits are slimming and flattering, a bold print is a fabulous swimsuit option as well. The busy pattern is a camouflage of sorts that helps hide figure flaws because the eye doesn’t know where to settle. Try one on and see just how flattering a bold floral or geometric print swimsuit can be.
Where to Shop for Swimsuits for Women Over 50
If you can walk into an actual store like Everything But Water or other swimsuit specialty shops, that is truly the way to go. There you can try on a variety of styles and sizes and get help from an expert who knows their inventory. I have found swimwear for myself at stores like this over the years and yes, you need to get in the right frame of mind and set aside some time to focus on the try-on. It may take an hour or two, but it is well worth worth your time to find the right suit. Look for suits that you know usually fit you, but get advice from the store stylists and also try on a few styles that may seem to be outside your comfort zone. You may be surprised at which style or styles actually look best on you.
Online shopping for swimwear is another option. You can try on the swimwear in the comfort of your home and get multiple sizes and styles to try on. The only drawback is you have to layout the cash to pay for the suits and the shipping in some cases, until you return what you don’t want. Other Important Swimsuit Features
- Look for adjustable straps because they offer a custom fit.
- Wider straps add more security and comfort than thin spaghetti straps for women over 50.
- Make sure the padded cups are not removable. Otherwise they fall out easily and are hard to reinsert to lay properly again.
- Also make sure that the clasps and hardware on the suit are sturdy. I once bought an inexpensive suit and the bra closure in the back was made of hard plastic which broke! Luckily it happened before I left the house.
