It’s still too early in the season, and we are all still trying to look cute, right? One of the ways to beat the cold and still stay warm is to try out the sweater dress trend. There are so many options to choose from, depending on your style. So, let’s dive in and pick out a few options that will work nicely for women over 50.

Simple Sweater Dresses
Starting with a simple style is usually a good choice to make when you are trying out a trend. I love to buy a basic color and silhouette of any new trend and see how to incorporate it into my own personal style. To start, you typically don’t want to spend a pretty penny on a piece; you want to look for items at an entry-level price point. I found this maxi length sweater dress that is incredibly cozy and is an easy piece to style with a pair of military boots and an oversized overcoat.

I also like the texture of this Banana Republic cable knit sweater dress. You can never go wrong with cable knit detail and the camel color is classic and timeless. You can add a printed teddy bear coat to mix textures and add some color to your look. Finally, I found this wide-ribbed, floor-length sweater dress from Free People, that has a simple silhouette that can be styled in many ways. I personally love the way it is modeled on the website, with some suede chukka boots and a pair of thick, cozy socks.
Sweater Dresses To Splurge On
If you want to jump into this trend and immediately splurge on some options, you can go with a luxe fabric content and classic print. I know that fair isle is currently having its moment, but if you ask me, this is a tried-and-true print that is timeless. This beautiful navy sweater dress from Nordstrom makes a great addition to your wardrobe. The long length guarantees to keep you warm in the chilly weather and the attention to details in the ribbed cuffs and neck definitely warrant the higher price point.
Another piece that you can invest in would be this turtleneck sweater dress from Anthropologie. The taupe color is always a great neutral choice and this one also has some fair isle patterns in the trim. The price point is a little bit higher, but this is one that can be worn many different ways for years. You can belt it, wear it with sneakers or boots, layer it up with a white button front shirt underneath with just the sleeve cuffs showing, or pile on the outer layers with a chunky cardigan or blazer.
Sweater Dresses With A Twist
You don’t have to stick with a basic, straight silhouette when you are shopping the sweater dress trend. I like to find options with a twist. Changing shapes, colors and silhouettes make this trend even more exciting and fun to try. I found this color-block, midi-length sweater dress from Express. This dress has some sex appeal with the deep V-neck, the banded waist, and the fitted skirt that hugs the hips.
Finally, if you are looking for a sweater dress with a more feminine take, try this long sleeved, knit dress. The puff sleeves, A-line skirt and belted waist are all beautiful details that make this dress a simple piece to style. There’s no need for lots of extras. Just add your favorite leather boots, winter overcoat and cozy scarf.
Sweater Dresses Style Tips
- Solid colors are always safe. Sweater dresses can be worn basically as staples. So don’t think you have to go all out and get some crazy print or pattern. A simple gray, navy, cream, or camel color one in a nice, cozy fabric is an option that can take you through the entire season and beyond.
- It’s OK to save but don’t scrimp. Quality is definitely a factor here. Finding a fabric blend that will maintain its shape is key. The easiest way to look unkempt when attempting this trend is to buy a piece that will lose its shape after a few wears. You don’t want the fabric to look stretched out and misshapen. So, if you don’t have a budget that will allow for you to splurge on a piece, you can at least find something mid-tier that will wear nicely through the season.
- Shop secondhand. I’m willing to bet there many options our there in the thrift and secondhand stores. Pieces from the 60s or 70s that are constructed from sturdy wool or alpaca blends that are beautifully constructed and will be a fraction of the cost of something similar in the retail stores. If you are a thrifter, I’d advise checking out your favorite shops to find a sweater dress that you love.
