If you’re like me, you may feel like you’re caught off guard by summer. This seems to happen to me every year. I look forward to wearing summer fashion, but the weather in Chicago stays cool and then suddenly the next day is 90 degrees! So I put together some summer outfits for women over 50 (OK, selfishly for me too) to wear on those really hot and humid days…when you actually need to see people! It may be for work, an outdoor party or just to feel good about yourself even when you’re just running an errand.
Chic Summer Outfits for Women Over 50
Besides having you covered with three summer outfit ideas for different purposes, I’ve also got you covered, literally! In my opinion, loose-fitting long sleeves, long dresses and pants in lightweight fabrics are the best way to go for women over 50. And you can most certainly still look chic and stylish, too. I know that I feel more comfortable in fashion that is less revealing which actually makes good sense in summer. Not only can you hide a few figure flaws, but you will get less sun exposure on your arms and legs, too. (But even so, still always wear your high SPF sunscreen!)
Summer Outfits for Really Hot Days Tips
1. Lighten Up. This probably goes without saying but wear light and airy woven fabrics on hot summer days. Look for clothing in cottons, linens, gauze and eyelet fabrics. Read the fabric content labels! Some active wear fabrics that are light and woven such as Tencel® may work on hot days and they will not get as wrinkled as cottons. Lighter weight fabrics can often be sheer, so if there is a lining make sure it’s cotton or woven, too. Wear smooth skin-tone underwear to avoid see-through as well.

2. Brighten Up. White and pastels or brighter citrusy colors like yellow, lime and orange will keep you cooler. Dark colors such as black and navy do not reflect the sun as well as light colors and retain more heat, making you feel warmer.
2. Loosen Up. Tight fitting clothes will make you feel uncomfortable on super hot and humid days. For example, loose fitting pull on gauze pants will give you more air to breathe than a pair of skinny jeans or faux leather.
4. Cover Up. As much as we want to bare our skin, keeping your arms and legs covered with a loose lightweight fabric will keep you cooler. The bonus here is that you will look stylish and appropriate in public (the street is not a beach!) and feel more confident with your arms or legs covered. Additionally, you will keep your skin out of the sun, but always wear sunscreen because the sun’s rays are sneaky and can still cause you harm.
5. Heads Up. When you are shopping (even if it is off-season) and you see a super light top, dress or pair of pants that you really like, pick it up! This way you will be prepared and have something to wear for one of those really hot summer days (you know they always catch you off-guard).

This outfit is perfect for any super hot summer day. You will look fashionable for a baseball game, a picnic, a doctor’s appointment, or even when you just run out to a store.
