Service Club of Chicago's Annual Holiday Luncheon 2011

Sheree Valukas and Hazel Barr

The Service Club of Chicago, an all women’s organization founded in 1890, held its annual holiday luncheon at the University Club on Michigan Avenue on Thursday, December 1. Event chair and long-time member Sheree Valukas welcomed a lovely crowd of 150 guests. Guests were entertained by the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus while designers and boutiques sold their holiday goods, gifts and fashions with 15% of the proceeds to benefit the Service Club. The participatong vendors included Mary Mary, Elda De la Rosa, Tails in the City, LuLu’s at the Belle Kay and Leslie Hodes Jewelry, among others. Each guest was asked to bring an age appropriate gift for children from 3 months to 13 years old to be donated to Clara’s Home Shelter. Located in West Englewood, the shelter offers programs focused on employment, housing, health care and education for women and children.

The Service Club of Chicago offers grants to charitable 501(3)(c) organizations in the Chicagoland area. To apply for a grant, go to serviceclubofchicago.org for an application. The deadline is January 15, 2012. I have been a member of the Service Club since 2002 and have seen firsthand all of the good that it does to serve the community. The club’s motto says it all, “For no one is greater than the service she renders the world.”
