While working on my computer yesterday, I noticed news articles popping up with photos of the distinguished Giorgio Armani. Oh no, I thought. Where has he been lately? Sadly, my first instinct was true. It was announced that Giorgio Armani had died at age 91. A good, long life—and he died from natural causes—but the news still made my heart sink. His impeccable collections have been a mainstay each season, and he will be sorely missed in the fashion world and by celebrities alike.
I was struck by many thoughts when I heard of his passing. First, whenever I hear the name Armani, I immediately think of impeccable, high-quality, expensive, chic, understated and elegant fashion. Then Richard Gere in American Gigolo comes to mind, and back in the 80s “a man in an Armani suit” was the epitome of cool, high-end style. In fact, those softer, less-constructed suits are just as amazing today as they were back then (I hope we see a resurgence).

It was thanks to Armani that it became cool—and appropriate—for men to wear a T-shirt under a sports jacket. Think Miami Vice. And Armani himself, often in a simple (but very high-end) T-shirt at his fashion shows.
As for women’s fashion, especially in recent years, I often looked to Armani for the best inspiration on how women over 50 could dress. His looks were never fussy or super trendy. (Although Emporio Armani did show barrel pants in 2024.) Armani understood how to design clothing that was modern yet timeless.
And of course, I always think of Lauren’s mother, who had a model figure and dressed to the nines. Armani was her favorite designer. It was the mainstay of her closet. She appreciated understated fashion that was always stylish with a twist but never overly trendy.
His aesthetics are completely in line with Fountain of 30. We believe women over 50—or at any age—should wear whatever they love, but it’s wise to invest in quality pieces that you’ll cherish for years, regardless of trends. That’s what Armani has shown us throughout his career.
“I have never been interested in being trendy for the sake of it,” he said in a 2017 interview with How to Spend It. “I have my own vision and ideas and am not afraid to go counter-current. Fashion tides change constantly, after all. There are times when fashion drifts away from my aesthetic beliefs, and there are times when it gets close. I just don’t care.”
And in true Armani spirit, he told Business of Fashion: “If you make clothes that are not part of the world we live in, they will be meaningless.”
