Actress Naomi Watts was recently spotted wearing this casual look on the streets of New York City. We adore her camouflage pants and she proves we are right about one thing we’ve been preaching – camouflage is a neutral! Naomi also confirms we should not be afraid to mix prints. She really has a lot going on here but somehow it all works together. She’s wearing plaid with stripes with camo and we like it! We want to steal her style. We found out her Sundry pants are $238 and her PS821 sneakers go for over $300. But we also nailed a way to get this Naomi Watts casual style mixed prints look for less.

Naomi is completely on trend with her oversize boyfriend style jacket. The reason her plaid print works with the stripes and other patterns is because it is so dark. It is a tone on tone navy so the plaid is very subtle. I found this Topshop boyfriend jacket in a similar bright navy with a tonal weave instead of a plaid. This jacket is only $125.

Pick up the bright navy from your jacket in a bold stripe top the way Naomi Watts did. This Bishop + Young Stripe Slub High/Low Tee for $80 has a more subtle stripe than Naomi’s top. I’m trying to ease you in to this mixed prints look. Besides, this top is the perfect transition piece with its soft slub knit and three quarter sleeves.

There are plenty of cargo style pant options so you can spend a lot less than $238 for pants like Naomi. These Unionbay Camo Stretch Twill Joggers are only $48. They don’t have the cool red piping down the sides like Naomi’s but they do have a lot of upscale details, like zippered cuffs and cargo pockets. When mixing prints you can almost always throw in camo! You see how it works for this look. A trick to wearing “camo as a neutral” is to choose a tonal camo pattern like this one. You see how the pattern is not busy or on a high contrast background. Think of it as a solid color when you style.

Mixing Prints Styling Tips

I learned a few new styling tips from Naomi Watts when it comes to mixing prints.

1. Style with tone on tone prints.  Naomi’s dark navy tone on tone plaid jacket almost appears to be a solid from a distance. It still has a pattern, but this kind of plaid works when you mix it with stripes and other patterns. So consider a tonal print (it can be light or dark) to be a solid color when you style your outfit and mix away!

2. Camouflage is a neutral. Use camo when you mix prints like it is a solid color, too.  Again, it is easier to style when using a tone on tone camouflage print, or one without a lot of contrast. But even busier camo prints are usually in neutral shades of olive, tan or beige, so you can mix them with any other color, like Naomi did with bright navy blue.

3. Add a bright stripe accent. It is amazing how the bright red stripe on the sides of Naomi’s pants adds a welcome pop of color to her outfit. So don’t be afraid to add another bright color in a detail to your mixed print look. It can be bright colored piping on the jacket, a colored strap on your handbag, or colored stripes on your sneakers. You can add pops of red, orange, yellow, lime or cobalt to this look.
