How to Wear The Clean Minimalist Suits Trend for Women Over 50

One of my favorite trends for Spring 2023 may look somewhat familiar to you. Minimalist suits reminiscent of the 90s are back! Clean, muted-hued pant suits showed up on many of the runways for spring and now they are in the stores. This is one trend that is ideal for women over 50 because they make us look chic and pulled together. Besides, minimalist suits are easy to wear. They are effortless to transition from day to evening with a quick change of your accessories and jewelry.

The Minimalist Suits Trend for Spring 2023

The pant suits for spring are long and relaxed, and void of extra buttons and details, or even lapels. Styling these minimalist suits is easy but what may be a bit tricky is finding the right cut and proportions for you. The new look in jackets is oversized, however you can also find a jacket that is nipped at the waist. There is a wide variety of pant shapes this season, so you can choose from wide leg to flare leg to pegged or cropped.

How To Choose the Right Suit for Your Body Type

1. If you are tall, you will probably have plenty of options. Taller women can carry off an oversized jacket, and the newer wide leg, straight leg or flare pants. All of these pant styles look great with flat shoes, too! You may want to avoid cropped pants because they may be too short on you and look like “high waters”.

2. If you are curvy or large busted, an oversized jacket may actually work for you too. It tends to minimize the bustline, but it could also hide your shape too much. A one button jacket, slightly nipped at the waist may be a better option for curvy women, with basic a straight leg pair of pants.

3. If you are petite, beware of the oversized jacket look because it may be too overwhelming on a smaller frame. A shorter and shaped jacket will work much better. As for pants, you can experiment with wide leg or high-waisted styles, but cropped pants work well on petite women.

4. Regardless of your body type, the look is relaxed. So make sure both the jacket and the pants skim over your body and are not too tight. If in doubt about the fit, go up one size. This look is slouchy and somewhat loose, and you will feel more comfortable that way too!

How to Wear The Clean Minimalist Suits Trend

The best way to wear the trend is with a simple t-shirt, tank or cami to keep the look simple and monochromatic. The suit needs to be the stand out to make this trend work, so play down your top.

There are many options for shoes including flats, loafers, slide sandals and puffy slides, to high heel sandals and mules. And your handbag can be a mini-bag, hobo, top handle or clutch.  When it comes to accessories, almost anything goes, which makes this trend so fun to style. A clean minimalist suit is a casual cool way to go from day to evening.

Keep your jewelry clean and modern, too. Simple hoops, stud earrings, a shiny choker or a cuff bracelet are all you need.

Here are some examples of different suit cuts and how to style them. Many if these are expensive designer suits, but I also included some from Zara.

 

Monochromatic

This Zara 100% Linen Straight Cut Blazer, $119 and Straight Leg Pants, $69.90 are styled with a tonal wrap top and casual flat black sandals. This suit shape is easy to wear for most body types and the monochromatic look is both casual and elegant.

 

Nipped and Shaped

You can find minimalist suits that are more fitted and shaped like this Interior The Fontaine Wool and Silk-blend Blazer, $1,900 and straight-leg pants, $1,300 in this gorgeous caramel color. This suit works with comfortable flat black shoes, a small shoulder bag and large hoop earrings.

Satin for Evening

You can wear satin for day as well, but this A.L.C. Dakota Satin Blazer, $695 and A.L.C. Ford Satin Straight-leg Pants, $450 suit is styled for evening without looking too fussy. Wear it with a white t-shirt, gold or silver chain choker necklace, a shiny metallic evening bag and sparkly heel slide sandals. I adore how this look shows us a mix of both casual and bling!

Go Bright!

While this season’s minimalist pant suit trend is all about muted and pastel shades, you can also go with a pop of bright color. This Chloé Wool, Silk and Cashmere-blend Twill Blazer, $4,000 and Silk-blend Twill Flared Pants, $2,210 is an option. This suit is styled with a simple black top, puffy slide flatform sandals and a neutral brown shoulder bag.

Slouchy and Belted

This oversized suit illustrates how you can get the slouchy look, but still keep it sleek. Cinch it with a belt! This Bottega Veneta Wool-twill Blazer, $3,100 is styled with a skinny belt (but you can add one to a less expensive jacket). The matching Pleated Wool-Twill Wide-Leg Pants, $1,200 add a casual element worn slighlty pooled at the ankles. This suit is styled with a woven leather top handle bag(Bottega Veneta of course)  and mid heeled square toe slide sandals. The model may not be wearing a top, but I suggest a scoop neck nude tank to get you the look.

The Lapelless Jacket and Belted Suit

This is another suit style from Zara I wanted to show you (even though it need a tank or cami). This Zara Lapelles Fitted Blazer, $79.90 is totally clean and minimalist, has a great price and an easy to wear shape. The Pants With Fabric-Covered Belt, $49.90 offer a more fitted look and will highlight your waistline. Wear this suit with high heel sandals or any of the styling options above.

Cropped Pants

The minimalist look works with cropped and tapered pants too. This Cefinn Jamie Wool-blend Blazer, $580 and Tristan Tapered Wool-blend Twill Pants, $390 show how to wear it. Style it with a tonal tank top and grab a green hobo bag (or any color) with high heel strappy white heel sandals.  (You can also wear this suit with strappy flat sandals instead.)
