There are few designers that embody the concept of decadence and high fashion better than Ralph Rucci. And it’s nothing short of a delight to see his clothing in action. Stepping into the Theater at Lincoln Center, you could feel the electricity from the guests just waiting for the show to begin. The program stated that there were 64 looks but when you’re in awe the whole time, the time just flew by. This is what a Spring collection should be.
The Spring/Summer 2014 season focused more on the everyday ease of practical clothing: sleek suits and sexy sheath dresses with a bit of a modern edge. Tuxedo pants paired with chiffon and laser cut leathers adding textures to paillette was nothing short of breathtaking. It’s the perfect balance of light and dark, airy and hardness. Observing all the details and craftsmanship put into each piece shows just how much he cares about the quality of his work. It takes great skill to so this without making the clothing look tired and over-worked.
I personally enjoyed the hand-painted chiffon top with side ruching, mimicking a bubbled floral hip-detail and paired with a python-embossed leather skirt. As it glided down the runway, I was instantly reminded why its a joy to see Rucci’s work. The movement shows all the for-fitting curves while the flounce adds the right amount of femininity without being vulgar. I can see these pieces being paired all over the red carpet, together or as build-able pieces. This is another reason why Rucci’s collection works. These are pieces that will last a lifetime and making them separates just means that you have more options and possibilities to wear these pieces. Rucci moves into phases and this is the phase now known as the “new” look. Though these pieces can be re-created by any other designer, it will never fit or have the luxury of a Ralph Rucci piece. And nothing is better than a Ralph Rucci piece.
