Underneath It All: The Lingerie and Undergarments Women Over 50 Need Now

The new year tends to make us think of re-organizing, re-decorating and clearing out the clutter from our lives – and our closets. While updating your wardrobe for the new year or next season feels natural, it’s important not to neglect your foundation. One of the easiest aspects of our outfits to overlook is the underpinnings, but those might be your most important pieces.  Let’s take a look at lingerie and undergarments for women over 50 you need now.

Lingerie and Undergarments for Women Over 50

At this point, we all know the difference that the right bra can make in your look and comf level, and shapewear is basically mainstream and worn by women of all ages and sizes to smooth things out or snatch that waist, depending on your silhouette goals.

We also can’t neglect the more practical pieces of everyday underwear or basics like socks and camisoles or tanks meant to be worn underneath sweaters and such. After all, while these may not be glamorous, a fresh pair is a little bit luxurious and don’t you owe to yourself to ban ugly, hole-y pieces from your closet in general?

Here are some of our favorite underpinnings that women over 50 (or any age) might want to pick up to start off 2023 with a solid foundation.

Tights and Socks

If you live somewhere that experiences real winter (or are just visiting a snowy destination), you need tights and a good pair of socks for warmth. Tights or the right pair of socks are also great accessories, however, whether you are using an opaque black pair like these from Hue to create a sleek line or adding a pop of color with “fun socks” (these pink leopard ones from Cole Haan would work well). We also like a bit of pattern or texture with our tights, like these dotted ones from H&M.

Hue Ultimate Opaque Tights, now $7.97

Cole Haan Women’s 2-Pair Short Leopard Print Crew Socks, now $9.97

H&M 40 Denier Dotted Tights, $12.99

Lingerie and Undergarments: Slips and Shapewear

You might think of slips or half-slips as old-fashioned, but they are experiencing a resurgence lately. And if you need a bit more support, there is no limit to the shaping options on the market now, ranging from shorts and panties that smooth things out and create seamless lines to modern versions of corsets and girdles that are significantly more comfortable (and technologically advanced) than their predecessors.

Unsurprisingly, the Nordstrom lingerie department will have you covered with everything from the classic half-slip (like this option from Montelle intimates) to pieces with more sculpting power, like these shorts from Honeylove. Also check out Bare Necessities for pieces like this shaping bodysuit from TC Fine Intimates.

Montelle Intimates Half Slip, $32

Honeylove SuperPower Shorts, Regular & Plus $89

TC Fine Intimates Extra Firm Control Open-Bust Bodysuit, $88

Bras (or Lack Thereof)

Regardless where you fall on the spectrum from highly structured, underwired bras to bralettes or camisoles that are basically just elastic and maybe a bit of lace, there’s no denying the impact that different bras can have on a look. For a lot of support and plenty of shape (that’s still pretty sexy and very comfortable), we are fans of the Soma Geo Lace bra that comes in a wide range of sizes. Need a little less oomph? Try the Enbliss Wireless bra for some sleekness and comfort.

Soma Stunning Support Geo Lace Full Coverage Bra, $66

Soma Enbliss Wireless Bra, $48

Layering Tees and Tanks

We all need a tee or tank under various pieces, to smooth things, provide a little extra coverage, and even another layer of warmth. We are long-time fans of Uniqlo’s Airism line for its cooling powers (perfect for overly heated indoor spaces in the winter as well as hotter climates), especially the camisoles and tees.

Uniqlo AIRism Camisole, $14.90

Uniqlo HEATTECH Scoop Neck Long-Sleeve T-Shirt, $19.90

Something Fun and Frivolous

While we all need the prosaic basics, there’s no denying the fact that lingerie can and should be fun sometimes. We think everyone who wants it should have a piece that is totally impractical but amazing to wear, and for us, that might be an amazing (and slightly unhinged) feathered robe like this one available via Amazon. It’s giving “glamorous soap opera villain” vibes and is available in your choice of colors.

Amazon Daily Life Mall Women’s Feather Bridal Robe, $95.90
