You may have heard that buying quality items and spending a little more upfront will save you money in the long run. As a person who is all about a great deal and spending less cash I have learned this the hard way. However, I have some personal experiences where spending more money has actually saved me money.
How To Save Money (By Actually) Spending More
Since the new year is often a time to look for ways to save money, I thought I would share 7 of my cost-saving tips. Here’s how to save money by spending more in 2024.

Go For Quality
The first case in point (and I am reminded of every single day since I use it) is a broom. Yes, a broom. Here’s the story. We needed a new broom and I reached for the $6 broom at the store, but my boyfriend insisted we get the $17 broom. I thought that sounded a bit expensive. Here is where my cheapness would have cost me money, because the Casabella broom we bought is beautiful and picks up every little crumb…every time I use it. Yes, I’m excited about a broom. We’ve kept this broom for the last 10 years and it’s good as new. The $6 broom would be in the garbage right now and I would have purchased 4 other cheap brooms and never have been so happy. The moral of the story: When you pay more for quality you will save money in the long run.
Get What You Prefer
Speaking of sweeping, I’m reminded of the inexpensive $9 kitty litter I tried for Ginger, our cat. She absolutely hated it and kicked it all over the floor. Luckily, I had the quality broom that worked beautifully, but I still spent a lot of time sweeping up the despised litter. Ginger prefers Fresh Pet litter and I like to get her the Clean Paws version (my preference) so she doesn’t track it all over the house. It costs around $18 but it is worth it. Get what you (and your cat) really like and whatever you buy will never go to waste.
Save Time With Convenience Products
And speaking of saving time, I actually spend extra money on lemons. I make a health drink with lemon juice every morning and nothing is more annoying and time consuming than fishing lemon seeds out of the blender at 6 in the morning. They simply won’t budge. So now I spend an extra $1.50 a bag on Seedless Lemons. These lemons are so convenient! Time is money.
Buy in Bulk
You know if you get the bigger size of a product, or buy it in bulk, your cost per ounce goes down. But you need to be careful with this concept, because it only works on items you know you will actually use. For example, I needed a good undereye concealer and I purchased a highly recommendedKevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer for $37. The beauty expert at the counter choose the absolutely perfect shade for me. She also told me that it would last a long time, and did it ever, well beyond my expectations. It is highly pigmented and a little goes a long way. I use it every day with a brush and it looks like I will have enough concealer to last the year. This is a case where “buying in bulk” (even though that bulk is only .3 oz) on a quality product saved me money.
Redeem Gift Cards Wisely
Over the holidays you may have received some wonderful gift cards. Of course the giver wants you to buy whatever you want with that card, but here’s a tip for using it wisely. Instead of running out to Starbucks for that peppermint latte, use the gift card to buy a pound of coffee. You can make around 30 cups of coffee with a pound and you can even get a fun flavor. By the way, Starbucks will even custom grind it for you to suit your coffee-maker.
Make It Yourself!
Make your own coffee (as explained above) or anything else (even a hamburger) and it will cost you less than if you buy it ready-made from a restaurant.
Effectiveness
I always hear how people swear by using cleaning products like Dawn or Tide, but sometimes I have trouble bucking up for them when I see a look-alike product on the shelf right next to them for a much lower price. But make no mistake (like I did in the past), these products cost more because they are more effective and you may not have to use as much of the product. That look-alike product is often watered down. Unless you want streaky dishes or dingy white clothes, stick with brands that get the job done!

I love this because it is so true. On most everything. Of course, then there’s Costco, whose QC is high on everything it labels and a sure bet.
