As They Sign Off, Here’s How The Kardashians Have Influenced Fashion

It’s been almost 15 years of drama, on-and-off romances, weddings, sibling rivalries, fighting, and of course, fashion. But just how far have Kim Kardashian and the Kardashian-Jenners come since they first started their reality show on E! in October 2007? Let’s look at how the Kardashians have influenced fashion.

After 20 seasons, the series finale of Keeping Up With The Kardashians has officially wrapped. Khloe Kardashian said she needs therapy after the final episode. Kris Jenner said it was “a mix of emotions.” And Kim Kardashian says she has “no regrets.”

And for good reason. The show has catapulted the Kardashians into billionaire status as America’s most famous family.

How The Kardashians Have Influenced Fashion

But while they’ve done their bit for society when it comes to reality television (they were some of the first) and social media (Kim K was one of the first influencers to really make Twitter and Instagram her own) what is it that the Kardashian-Jenners have really done for fashion? Sure, there was Dash, the sisters’ boutique in Calabasas and Soho which later expanded to Miami and West Hollywood. Sure, Kim K has her beauty and fragrance empire, Khloe Kardashian has Good American and Kourtney Kardashian has Poosh.

Kim Kardashian – Minimalism

As I write the word minimalism next to Kim Kardashian‘s name, I take  a deep breath. Ten years ago, Kim K and the word minimalism would never have been in the same sentence.

There was a time when Kim Kardashian was teased for her pin-up girl looks. She wore slinky dresses and monogrammed Juicy Couture tracksuits, too much makeup, and too much obvious branding. Vogue magazine called it the “look of Los Angeles in the early 2000s.” I call it trying too hard.

The fashion risk-taker has since turned fashion icon. And of course, her seven-year relationship with Kanye West (which sadly was on its way out in the last episode) had something to do with it. It was Kanye who pushed her to clean out her mega fashion closet. It was Kanye that introduced her to his fashion friends and took her to the Met Gala.

And it was Kanye who gave her the most breathtaking addition to her fashion – minimalism. Is this what landed her on the cover of countless fashion magazines? No one knows for sure, but one thing is certain – it’s definitely added a breath of fresh air to Kim K’s otherwise over-the-top fashion (latex suits and clear heels anyone?)

Khloe Kardashian – Denim and Showing A Little Skin

There was one episode early on in the series that I remember so clearly. Kris Jenner was heading to the beach for a meeting – a possible new business venture – and she took Khloe along. But Khloe Kardashian was having a hard time. Why? She couldn’t walk in the sand in her sky-high Christian Louboutins.

Since then, Khloe has certainly gone through a fashion evolution. And it has nothing to do with her weight. Or does it? You can’t argue that there are things she feels more comfortable wearing now that she doesn’t have to hide anything. At the same time, gone are the fur wraps and the overabundance of sky-high heels, replaced by baggy hoodies and denim.

No, she doesn’t always have the best looks (anyone remember that denim tuxedo?) But Khloe is definitely more comfortable in her skin and she has the wardrobe to prove it. One of her typical looks (besides the hoodie, of course) is a bodysuit over high-waisted denim. And since she teamed up with Emma Grede to create a new denim collection called Good American, she definitely has the denim to boot.

Kourtney Kardashian Fashion – Bold Style

The one thing I always loved about Kourtney Kardashian is that of all the Kardashian-Jenner sisters, she stayed the most true to herself. Sure, he had a boob job at one point, but she never hid it. And she had the most normal upbringing of all the sisters, even going to college before the reality show made it big. Besides that, though, she was unapologetic. Whether it was fighting with Scott or trying to save the world by using eco-friendly products or feeding her kids organic food, she was proud of who she was (or at least she seemed that way on TV.)

She decided how much of her own personal life she would give up and what she would wear. She decided what was best for her kids and how attentive (or inattentive) she would be to the father of her children.

Even as Kim and Khloe’s changed and evolved, Kourtney continued to wear what she wanted. It’s obvious that her sisters influenced her, but just how much? After all, she was the one to start the Dash boutique. And she still wears outfits that make us scratch our heads, but she doesn’t care what you think about it.

Whether it’s a black and white cutout Valentino dress or a monochromatic outfit, Kourtney continues to follow trends but wears what she wants, no matter who is trying to talk her out of it. She’s a little bit boho, a little tough girl, and all of those things in between. Her constant style change proves it.

Kris Jenner – Age Appropriate

At age 65, Kris Jenner, the matriarch behind five daughters, one son, and 10 grandchildren, isn’t afraid to admit she’s had some work done (OK, maybe a lot). There were even episodes devoted to it. While the Kardashians are notoriously very secretive about all their plastic surgeries, Kris has admitted to breast implants, a neck lift, and a slew of other ways to keep herself looking younger. What’s ironic (or interesting if you ask me) is that despite wanting to look younger and going out numerous times with her daughters, she still dresses age appropriately for the most part. Sure she wears black leather pants and velvet blazers or white business suits and bold Givenchy jackets, but she has never tried to do dress exactly like her daughters. Instead, she dresses like a woman in charge who knows what looks good on her and will take fashion risks to a degree.

If you ask me, this is the best Kardashian fashion example of all.
