Summer Makeup Saver: Mineral Powder Sunscreens

You know how it is in the summer…you put your face on in the morning and by noon it has melted off your face. Instead of reaching for your trusty blotting powder, why not consider one with SPF? Personally I’m really into mineral powder sunscreens these days. I know I’m a little insane with SPF, but I use a SPF primer and then usually apply either an SPF liquid foundation, BB Cream or mineral powder foundation. So I’m good to go when I walk out the door. However, I now make sure to keep a powder brush-on broad spectrum mineral powder sunscreen in my makeup bag to apply throughout the day. Why? I have learned applying sunscreen every 2-3 hours in the hot summer sun is a MUST. I like mineral foundations with the powder in the brush, but you may prefer a compact. Either work at absorbing that hateful shine and are totally portable (I sometimes apply some to my kids if I feel they need sunscreen and I don’t have theirs handy in my bag).

You want to make sure the one you chose is a broad spectrum sunscreen (that means it protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays). The higher the SPF, the better. They are so easy to use and keep your makeup looking fresh with no oily or greasy mess, like with regular sunscreens (which can also ruin your makeup). Most provide sheer, natural looking coverage.

Why are mineral sunscreens suddenly all the rage and the ones doctors prefer? Because unlike most chemical sunscreens minerals do not get absorbed into your body at all. They sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays which is better and more effective. There main two ingredients you are likely to see in a mineral sunscreen are usually a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Other reasons mineral foundations are preferable are because they don’t break down in the light (photostable) and they are non-irritating, which is great news for those of us with sensitive skin.

Mineral powder foundations have come a long way in recent years. Here are some you should keep tucked in your cosmetic bag the rest of the summer.
