There has been just enough of a hint of spring in the air lately to start thinking about transitional dressing — but let’s be honest, it’s still sweater weather. That’s exactly why we’re resharing this post from December. Cable knit sweaters may feel like a winter staple, but many of these styles work beautifully right now, when temperatures fluctuate and layering becomes essential.
Cable knits add texture and warmth without feeling overly heavy, making them perfect for bridging the gap between cozy winter outfits and lighter early-spring looks. From sweaterdresses to tunics and relaxed pullovers, these pieces are easy to style now with boots and layers — and later with denim, flats, or even bare legs as the season shifts.
They are classic, but this season traditional cable patterns have taken on a more modern, stylish life. From creative cuts to cables popping up in unexpected places, these chunky yet versatile knits prove they’re not just for the coldest months of the year.

Here are some of our favorite cable knit styles right now:

Cable Knit Sweaterdresses
A sweaterdress is a winter classic and we love wearing them with tights and knee-high boots. This one from the Gap is the perfect length and the gold buttons give it a luxe feeling that makes it look more expensive than it is.

Prefer a bit more length? This ankle-length option from Express is another great (and affordable) find.

Cable Knit Tunics
Love a long, lean look, even in the cooler weather? We love pieces like this sleeveless cable knit tunic sweater from Anthropologie for that—pair with straight or skinny cream or taupe pants for a monochromatic look, and pile on bold cuff bracelets for polish.

Over the Knee Cable Knit Socks
Layer long plush socks like these by UGG over tights with tall boots and a skirt that has some swing. It’s an easy way to add some extra warmth, texture and fun to winter outfits.

Wide Leg Cable Knit Pants
Cable knit pants may seem tough to pull off, but this Gap version is surprisingly wearable. Pair it with a fitted tee or turtleneck.

Varsity Sweaters
Also called cricket sweaters, these striped cable knits are a traditional piece. It’s fun to change it up with unexpected styling, like mixing it up with wide leg denim and boots or wearing a contrasting button down open underneath (we love a stripe or small check here). And with this style, you can’t go wrong with Ralph Lauren, like this version available at Macy’s.

Cable Knits With High Collars
Embrace the quarter zip movement in your own way with a cable knit version, like this one from Draper James.

Hooded Cableknit Sweaters
Just add a hood and perhaps some extra length, and a cable knit sweater goes from preppy staple to the perfect thing to throw over leggings or joggers to elevate your favorite athleisure. An added bonus? This version from Aiopr at Amazon has pockets that are big enough to be useful. Choose from over a dozen colors.
