If it’s true the older you get, the wiser you are, does that mean the older you get the better your fashion? Fountain of 30 would probably argue yes, for a few reasons.
Reason #1 is that you’ve already been out there in the world, you’ve seen the trends and you know what looks good on you and what doesn’t. Let’s hope you’ve had your bad fashion moments and you’ve passed them by and your fashion-savvy friends (or stylists) have set you straight.
Reason #2 is that at this point you’re hopefully secure enough in your finances to buy some fashion worthy pieces. I remember our dear co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Lauren Dimet Waters explaining that it doesn’t make sense that mass retail caters to the millennial market because it’s the older women that have the money to buy the clothes. And she’s absolutely right!

You would think that celebrities would follow these rules to a T. They have the funds and they grow wiser with experience in their celebrity world. Yet, so many of them just get worse with time, or pick outfits that make them look younger (or older) than their years and not in a good way.
So let’s pay homage to the celebs who do it right, finding appropriate looks in high style, no matter what their age.
Gabrielle Union – Abodi – Long Sleeve Maxi Dress
Gabrielle Union knows how to mix and match her style. One day she’s wearing something elegant, the next day she’s wearing something athletic and sporty. She always surprises me with her fashion, it’s not something you would expect her to wear but it looks fabulous on her. This Abodi dress is no exception. The color combo is unique and the v-neck is inspiring. She tones it down a bit with the long sleeves and the long hemline but the style is still coming out in droves.
Nicole Kidman – Polished Blazer And Boots
Yes, summer is still around, so maybe it’s not quite time to whip out that wool blazer and those leather boots, but there’s something so powerful and polished and effortless I find about this look from Nicole Kidman at the Telluride Film Festival. It could just be because I’m so used to seeing her in a high fashion gown on the red carpet that makes this look so refreshing or it could be that she puts the look together so easily. I saw some other celebs at this event and they don’t pull the casual look off quite as well as she does. If she hadn’t added the jeans or the boots, you could argue that her look would be too grandma, but instead it’s perfect and clean and age appropriate without making anything seem blah.
Kate Mara – Collared Blouse, Studded Shoes
Kate Mara might be a thirty-something (mid-3os to be exact) but the over 40 set could learn a thing or two from her style. She has the perfect juxtaposition of sophistication and youth thrown together with style and grace. The satin collared blouse should be admired here, along with the cap sleeves, that hit at her elbow. They are mixed with a pair of black skinny pants, with a cool zipper and some fun black studded shoes which give the look a bit of edge, along with the chain from her handbag. A great way to mix age appropriate and young without looking like you’re trying to appear youthful beyond your years.
Michelle Yeoh – Blue Lace
At 56 years old, Michelle Yeoh might just be a breakout star, at least in the United States. The Malaysian Chinese actress achieved fame in the early nineties after staring in a series of popular Hong Kong action films, but most people in America don’t really know her. It might be time to get to know her, if her style has anything to say about it. Feminine lace is always an age appropriate go-to look in my opinion, as long as the lace has a modern twist. In this case, it’s the color that speaks for itself, along with some fun peep-toes in a darker shade of blue.
