The times, they are a’changin. Besides having more Netflix shows as nominees than ever before, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards showed its “sign of the times” when it decided to hold the show virtually instead of in the Microsoft Theater in Los Angels as it had in 2019 and 2018. Let’s take a look at the 2020 Emmys fashion.
Of course, we weren’t expecting the glitz and glamour of past awards shows. After all, the world is grappling with the coronavirus AND receiving an award at home is nowhere near as exciting as receiving it on a podium in front of all your peers. But alas, the actors and actresses and talks show hosts and reality stars and TV personalities who appeared in the boradcast took their jobs seriously. And the event, with Jimmy Kimmell as its host, became a little more than just “come as you are.”
Many predicted that the A-listers Zooming from home would be dolled up in PJs. But it was not to be. “It became clear that even Hollywood A-listers miss the act of dressing up for a glitzy awards night, almost as much as we, the spectators, miss watching the step-and-repeat’s spectacle,” wrote Christian Allaire for Vogue.com.

Instead, the stars took to social media to show off their stunning outfits. Shira Haas, an Israeli actress who starred in Netflix’s Unorthodox (which won for Best Director) even showed up on screen from her apartment in Tel Aviv at 4am, clad in Chanel.
Perhaps Irish actor Paul Mescal wrote it best: “This is nuts,” he wrote on Instagram. “I am wearing @louisvuitton on my stairs for the Emmys!” Paul was nominated for his starring role in the Netflix series Normal People.
The 2020 Emmys Fashion
Here are the other stars that turned heads on Sunday night:
Blackish star Tracee Ellis Ross always looks stunning, whether she’s on a red carpet or not. “How fun to get dressed up!” she writes on Instagram, “Can’t say I miss the frenetic energy of the red carpet or wearing high heels, but boy do I miss a pretty dress!” The actress looks as glamorous as a gold disco ball in Alexandre Vauthier with Jimmy Choo shoes.
Besides the cast of Schitt’s Creek, which swept many of the awards that evening, Zendaya was the clear winner of the night as the youngest person to ever win an Emmy Award (she’s 24.) She also had some of the best looks to boot. (I say looks because there were two.) Her go-to designer of the evening was Christopher John Rogers (someone I’ve never actually heard of) who gave her two stunning looks, one of which came with a statement-making polka dot ball gown skirt and the other which featured a royal purple taffeta skirt complete with a chic, built-in cummerbund.
