We all love our cropped leggings, tanks, tees and other athleisure outfits in the spring, summer and fall. However, once the weather turns chilly it’s time to layer it on. But it is easier than you think to maintain that same level of comfort while turning up your internal temperature. Winter activewear might make you think of big marshmallow coats and huge moon boots (and sometimes those have their place – like when you’re outside and it’s below zero). But there’s a lot more to winter athleisure than that. Here’s how to do winter athleisure when you’re over 40.
Winter Athleisure Outfit Ideas
Need some winter athleisure outfit ideas? We’ve got you covered.
Upgrade Your Sweatshirts
Seriously, toss the basic hoodies and get something has some structure but is just as soft and comfy, like this Zella wrap sweatshirt, this hooded Blanc Noir long velour jacket, or this quilted New Balance pullover. It might be the easiest way to not only take your lighter weight activewear or athleisure pieces into winter, but also to make all your casual or lounging outfits more sophisticated. Any of these toppers would look great with jeans or casual trousers as well, or even casual knit skirts and dresses paired with booties or chunky sneakers.

Winter Athleisure Hooded Top + Vest + Scarf
This trio of cozy pieces can be either frumpy or completely fabulous, it all depends on the pieces you pick and their proportions when you mix them together. Something sleek like this Eileen Fisher hooded vest might work well (plus we always like a hood to protect your hair from the snow and rain), and this Moose Knuckles vest with gold zippers definitely qualifies as luxe winter athleisure. Add a slim cut top underneath or your favorite long sleeve tee and top it all with a casual scarf from Shopbop like this snow leopard print one by Apparis.
Lined Leggings +/- Joggers Or Sweats
Need to add some extra warmth to your favorite joggers or sweats? Throw a pair of cold weather leggings or fleece lined leggings (UnderArmour makes great ones) underneath a pair of joggers or wide leg sweats like these surprisingly chic Nike track pants.
Good Socks + High Tops
It should practically go without saying that thick snuggly socks are necessary to survive a cold winter, and Uniqlo HEATTECH socks have become the gold standard. Add a pair of plush boot-sneaker hybrids like these by Marc Fisher or these by Dolce Vita and your feet will be nice and toasty – and super comfortable.
Just Add (Faux) Fur
A little faux fur trim on a vest, jacket or hoodie can make everything feel more appropriate for the season. This Goldbergh vest might be a splurge, but it is a luxurious classic that you can wear everywhere from après ski to running errands around town, and there’s nothing more fun than a beanie with a furry pom to top it off. Pick up this hat by FURTALK on Amazon in multiple colors for a steal.
Layer Your Lengths
A cropped sweatshirt can be wearable over a longer top. A crossover style like this one from Amazon looks more sophisticated than a typical cropped shirt, plus it is more flattering since it draws the eye on the diagonal. For even more warmth, try this RBX mock zip pullover. Wear a longer tee or tank underneath and pair with your favorite leggings, joggers, or sweats (or both!) and enjoy the coziness.
Embrace Tech Fabrics
Plenty of athletic or sportswear brands have cold weather versions of your favorites. Under Armour makes some amazing cold weather gear (like the aforementioned leggings), Champion, and of course Uniqlo HEATTECH leggings, tops, and other layering pieces are excellent. Nike ThermaSphere is also a good high performance cold weather option that looks chic and stylish, and this half-zip top is a great layering piece for the gym or a casual day out.
Athleisure fashion isn’t going anywhere no matter what season it is, and all it takes is a few adjustments to perfect your winter athleisure or activewear ensembles. And if you want to glam things up for the holidays or just because? There’s no reason not to wear a fabulous pair of earrings or necklace with even the most casual outfit, after all, so wear your diamonds with your puffy vest and enjoy!
