It’s time to cast aside the fashion taboo that leather and suede is only for the winter months. Suede has made a major comeback and not in the heavy weight 1960s and 70s hippie way. Suede has been re-imagined for today’s modern woman (and man!) and is now soft, buttery, lightweight and ideal for transitioning into the warmer weather months.
We saw suede all over the runways in SS16 shows and again this past NYFW for FW16 in the form of dresses, tops, pants, accessories and of course outerwear; so we know it’s going to be everywhere. One of my favorite things about this modern suede trend is you can find a piece to suit your style, fit your body type (many of them have some stretch) and suede now comes in every color of the rainbow. It’s fun to play around with the pastels like yellow, robin’s egg blue, or pink in the form of a trench coat, a pair of oxford shoes or a purse to accent a neutral spring outfit. My favorite suede items are the rich jewel tones that scream lush sophistication; a turquoise moto jacket with a pair of white jeans and an airy shirt is my spring style aspiration!
This season’s suede is rich in texture but the best thing is you don’t have to be rich to rock it. If you want to sport the trend but are on a budget, there are synthetic suede pieces that are impeccably crafted. Of course, we all want that Helmut Lang trench coat, but some of us will have to leave that for our daydreams and find something a little more budget friendly. Try pieces by Free People, Vince or shoes by Jeffery Campbell to get started. But for ladies that can dive deep into their wallets, it’s always fun to go runway with fabulous pieces from Alberta Ferretti, Gucci and Lanvin.
