Runway To Real Way: From the Sea to the Streets: Blue& White Stripes for Spring 2016

Now that we’re officially into March and temperatures are teasing us with a steady rise, we’re ready to breathe a breath of fresh air into our clothes with lighter fabrics, breezier colors, and everything that channels the springtime blues! Spring 2016’s runways were awash with a plethora of blue and white stripes, taking the look from the sea to the streets. One show in particular that had iterations of blue stripes we just couldn’t wait to get our hands on was Ralph Lauren. Always the epitome of classic and sophisticated style, the Spring 2016 Ralph Lauren collection showcased vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines in shades of blue from navy to electric, each more vibrant than the next. We went out in search of our own springtime blues and found four stellar looks you can wear forever without breaking the bank.

Retail chain Express has come a long way since the Editor pant and knock off Herve Leger dresses of bygone days. Their day and workwear collections are fresh, current and versatile, proving they’re a far cry from the club. We loved the tailoring and silhouette of the Slim Fit Navy and White Portofino shirt, which had us recalling the gorgeous button-downs of the Ralph Lauren collection. Tucked into jeans, slacks, or a flowing skirt, this one piece provides tons of mileage for the season.

The transition from winter to spring is a time that begs for scarves to become an essential wardrobe staple. Few occasions wouldn’t work for a scarf to be looped around and added onto an outfit. This chic, fringed number from Target (!) calls to mind careless days on the Nantucket seashore, and can be paired with anything from sundresses or jeans to a leather jacket while jet setting off to that spring break getaway.

We always appreciate Ralph Lauren’s ability to reinvent fabrics and patterns in innovative ways. His blue and white striped gown with the asymmetrical hem is all of us wishing we were going to some amazing preppy ball. Alas, that invitation seldom comes our way so for striped dresses, it may be wiser to go a more casual and everyday route. We love the layerability of the Rare London Midi Dress, a simple piece on its own but just begging to be tucked under a sleek jacket, pulled over a tissue-thin t-shirt or loaded down with sparkling baubles. Spring and fall staples are all about layering and function (at least in the Midwest!) and this one little dress is worth its weight in gold for next to nothing.

Finally, where would a piece on spring fashion be without some sort of cropped pant? We wouldn’t often reach for vertical striped pants but the bold and simple pattern of these navy trousers make them more interesting than denim yet versatile enough to be a neutral. In addition to white or black, just about any color in the springtime rainbow of hues could work with this color combo as well. And at a rise that stops just above the ankle, you could get away with pulling these on for either work or play.
