I have always heard (from my brother who has two sons) how sports are important for boys, making them more confident, disciplined and team players throughout their lives. Well what about girls? The same concept applies and that’s what Girls In The Gameis all about. They provide and promote sports and fitness opportunities, nutrition and health education and leadership development for Chicago-area girls.
Last week the Girls In The Game 21st Anniversary Field Of Dreams Gala was held at Chicago Marriott. Second City Style donated and I was asked to attend. The event drew a huge crowd for this great cause. The event started off with a wine reception, silent auctions and Mystery Bags (for $25 you could pick out a brown mystery bag – some were marked with ribbon colors indicating if the bag was for women or contained liquor). Guests found everything from $100 restaurant cards, to fine bottles of wine to event tickets and so much more in the Mystery Bags. I picked a cool fitness wrist monitor!

The Silent Auction
The most inspiring part of the evening was hearing from some of the girls themselves and their experiences as mentors and coaches for Girls In The Game. They were wonderful speakers and all on their way to colleges and universities next year. We also heard from Girls In The Game 2016 Champions Val Ackerman, Commissioner of Big East Conference; Israel Idonije, Former Chicago Bear and Founder of Israel Idonije Foundation; Leo Burnett #likeagirl Campaign Team; and John W. Rogers, Jr., Chairman, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of Ariel Investments.
Emcee for the evening was NBC 5 Sports Reporter Peggy Kusinski(pictured above, left). Co-Chairs were Shannon Coomes(right) and Becky Frankiewicz.
