Baby it’s cold outside! The dreaded winter chill is in the air and suddenly I want to wrap myself in a huge blanket, all the time! So when you need to brave the elements, a cozy and warm winter coat is in order. Like many women over 50, I already have a lot of coats. However I wanted to get an update on the latest designer coat trends. Besides reviewing the fall/winter 2023 runway trends, I did a little shopping online to see what’s new.
Basically, the coats this season are longer and more oversized. Shearling, faux fur and teddy styles are still trending too. You may already own a great coat, but it’s always a good idea to find out if it is still stylish or if you need an update.
Warm Winter Coats: Splurge Vs. Steal
You can splurge on one of these gorgeous designer coats and they are well worth the investment. But you can also get a coat for a much slower price. Here are some of my favorite designer coats of the season and similar looks for less.

Take a look at these warm winter coats and decide for yourself. Will you will splurge or steal?
Grey Shearling Warm Winter Coat
This Yves Salomon Belted shearling coat for $4,435 is my absolute favorite coat of the season. It is so soft, warm and flattering with its belted silhouette. However the price is not my favorite, so I found this Zadig & Voltaire Monacoco Faux Fur Coat in the same gorgeous grey for $898. It is still an investment, but a good price for a designer coat and you may prefer faux fur anyway.
Periwinkle Blue Wool Coat
Why not wear a punchy color coat like this periwinkle blue Stella McCartneyv+Net Sustain double-breasted wool coat. The price tag of $2,100 is kinda steep, but you can get a similar colored coat with this MICHAEL Michael Kors Notch Collar Wool Blend Coat which is now on sale for only $199.
Black Fur Trim Winter Coat
How about a combination of fur and wool? This Yves Salomon Shearling-trimmed wool and cashmere-blend coat for $4,770 gives you the best of both worlds, soft cashmere and fur trim. But for only $200 you can wrap yourself in this Via Spiga Wool Blend Belted Coat with Faux Fur Trim.
The Teddy Coat
It may have been a big trend a few years ago, but the teddy coat has become a classic. Why? Because it is warm, lightweight and versatile. It works with your dresses and business attire as well as your favorite faded denim jeans or gym clothes. You can’t go wrong if you splurge on the original Max Mara Nuevo Teddy oversized double-breasted alpaca, cashmere and silk-blend coat for $4,690. It’s a classic. But you can forgo the fine fabric and opt for this J.Crew Relaxed topcoat in sherpa blend for only $263.
The Red Warm Winter Coat
Make a statement in a bold red coat this winter. This Valentino Garavani Oversized mohair-blend coat for $7,600 is long, warm and you certainly won’t be missed. What? You had other plans for your $7,600? You can get this shorter J.Crew Mirabelle topcoat in Italian wool blend for only $398 instead.
Oversized Navy Double Breasted Coat
If you want a sleek and modern coat this navy Dries Van Noten Rissa double-breasted woven coat for $1,750 is the ultimate. It has oversized shoulders to give you a powerful look. For a slightly less powerful look that is still chic at a much lower try this Mango Double-breasted wool coat in dark navy for $350.
The Classic Camel Coat
Wrap yourself in luxury with this soft Max Mara Manuela Icon belted camel hair coat for $3,450. If if want a steal, you can pick up this Mango Wide lapel wool-blend coat for $300.
Do you need a new warm winter coat? Will you splurge on a designer coat or get one for a steal?
