How to Style a Chic Holiday Party Outfit High and Low

The holidays are now in full swing, and with that comes the gatherings and festivities. Suddenly you may be wondering (like me) what are you going to wear to your next holiday party? I know that I want to be completely comfortable, whether I am hosting a party or attending one. Now that I’m over 50, I know I don’t want to wear anything too tight or bare, but I still like to bring on the glitter and glam of the season. So I put together a comfy and chic holiday party outfit that is perfect for women over 50.

Holiday Party Outfit Styled High Low

First I put together the high-end designer pieces (on the left) and then I found similar looking lower priced fashion (on the right). This illustrates and gives you a comparison on how an all high-end outfit compares to a low-priced outfit. It doesn’t look very different, right? However the quality and fabrics is always better on the more expensive pieces. Yet sometimes, especially if it’s just for one holiday party, you may as well go with the less expensive fashion. Or you can do what I like to do and mix the high with the low, which is known as high low styling.

My Holiday Party Outfit for 2023

For this outfit, I was inspired by a pair of basic black wide leg jersey pants from The Row. They may seem like a boring inspiration piece, but these pants have an-easy to wear silhouette and a beautiful drape. Next I thought that a glittery sweater or top would make a stylish statement and still be comfortable. I added a pop of color with a bright red pump (I got this idea from the way Lauren dresses), a silver handbag and crystal jewelry.

This holiday party outfit is simple and appropriate for a variety of events, but it still makes an impact Here’s how to style this holiday look both high and low.

Black Sequin Top

A long sleeve black top with sequins will keep you warm, cozy and sparkly for your holiday party. This drool-worthy Carolina Herrera Sequined Long-Sleeve Top is $1,690 but is one that you can wear for the next 10 years (at least)! So you may like to invest in it when you consider your cost-per-wear. But this Juela Tee is equally stylish, has a less fitted shape (which yo may like better) and is now only $183.

Wide Leg Jersey Pants

The Row Essentials Gala jersey wide-leg pants for $1,190 are the ideal pair for this holiday party outfit. The pull-on style, the figure-forgiving wide legs and stretch jersey fabric will allow you to breathe! But you can save over 90% and pick up these River Island Black flared trousers for only $73.

Bright Red Shoes

If you don’t own a pair of bright red shoes, a holiday party is a good excuse. These Manolo Blahnik Maysale 70 buckled suede mules for $795 are a classic style that you will want to add to your collection. The low heel and covered toe is a must-have style for women over 50. However, I knew I could turn to Ann Taylor for a low heel pump, and these Suede Square Topline Slingback Pumps are a less-expensive alternative for $158. And the heel straps will help keep them on your feet, especially after a couple holiday cocktails.

Shiny Silver Handbag

Bring on the glitz and add a bright spot to your all black holiday look with a silver handbag. If you’re a handbag collector, this Gucci Blondie metallic leather shoulder bag in silver is a worthy investment at $1,980. You can wear it for the holidays as well all year round. But if you think you will only carry a silver bag a few times, you might want to grab this A New Day™ Micro Nano Satchel Handbag from Target for only $15!

Square Hoop Crystal Earrings

Crystal earrings are a holiday tradition, at least in my book! But with the sequin top, a sleek geometric pair like these Amina Muaddi Charlotte silver-tone crystal hoop earrings for $737.75 would look amazing. But that is a lot to spend, especially around the holidays, so you can get the look for less with these Nordstrom Dappled Crystal Square Drop Earrings for only $35
