One of the best things about traveling to cities that are so unlike your own is seeing how people dress and interact or engage with fashion. Seeing what we have in common and what other cities or locations do differently (and in some cases, better) is always intriguing and inspiring. My recent trip to Japan was full of this kind of inspiration! I spotted amazing fashion and beauty trends in Japan to share with you and will show you how to get the look.
Trendspotting Fashion and Beauty in Japan
From the everyday looks worn by the ultra-cool residents of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, the trendier looks popular in the fashion-centric areas like Shimokitazawa and Harajuku to the simple but elegantly functional outfits in the countryside, there was something for everyone and every need or occasion.
Here are some of the most visible trends and options that are available more globally.

Long Narrow Skirts
These often feature a kick pleat or knee-high slit up the back or front (or both) to make walking easier, these ankle or midi-length skirts were usually tailored and made of wool or a similar suiting fabric in black, gray, navy and various shades of brown. This Theory skirt is a good way to get the look.

Pilgrim Style Buckles
Big, bold buckles — mostly on shoes but sometimes on handbags and hair clips as well — were a noticeably common accessory, sometimes adorned with rhinestones or pearls. Think Roger Vivier-style buckles on loafers or boots, like these available at Neiman Marcus.

Crossbody Designer Bags
Japan loves its visible labels, but the big oversize and overstuffed totes didn’t seem as popular as the smaller and hands-free crossbody silhouettes, like the Gucci Marmont bags.
Which makes sense given that nearly everyone takes public transit in Japan! Note that if you’re shopping in Japan, vintage or second hand designer bags in impeccable condition can be found fairly easily, and fakes are very rare due to strict laws and border controls.

Long Wool Coats
Long, sleek, neutral-colored, and made from wool or cashmere, the elegant coat was the apparel du jour in November. If you’re in the market for a new coat that can be impossibly chic in every scenario, this one from Banana Republic fits the bill.

Faux Fur Scarves
What to pair with the aforementioned long coat? A fluffy faux fur scarf or wrap of course. Stoles or scarves with a criss-cross loop built-in were popular and available at all price points — pick up one like this option Dikoaina via Amazon to layer over your jackets to get the look.

Black and White Print Furs In Japan
Speaking of fur, black and white dalmatian, ermine or snow leopard-esque prints were some of the most popular options. Get a similar look with a faux fur coat like this one by Bardot via Revolve.

Lash Serums, High Gloss Skin and Pale Pink Makeup Shades
Natural looks focused on well-hydrated skin were the standard, with “glass skin” being a common desirable aesthetic. If there was any visible makeup, it was often pale pink or “sakura pink” eyeshadow or blush. Try this liquid blurring cream blush from Anatasia in baby pink to get the look with a product that’s readily available stateside.

Lash serums are also popular (this one from Kiss Me Heroine is available in the U.S.), with a focus on a natural look versus heavier mascara, liner or lash extensions.
