A Transitional Summer to Fall Outfit: How To Style it High and Low

The temperatures may not be telling you but your calendar (and all the stores) are letting you know that fall is just around the corner. So what should you wear when you transition from summer to fall? I put together this chic transitional summer to fall outfit with breathable fabrics and lightweight layers to make it easy for you. This outfit also includes a few of the new fall trends that will give your wardrobe a little boost.

Summer To Fall Transition Fashion Tips

1. Wear Breathable Fabrics. Wear lightweight woven fabrics that are breathable. That’s why I chose lightweight denim jeans and a light and airy top for the base of this outfit. The weather in late summer and early fall can begin very warm and humid, and can change to cool in the middle of the same day. Simply slip on a jacket to stay warm. I recommend a twill or tweed jacket when transitioning from summer to fall. It may be a little too early to feel comfortable in leather and faux leather just yet.

2. Don Fall Colors. Even if it is warm out in September and October, I personally don’t like wearing tropical colors (like hot pink, lime  and aqua) in these months. Instead I prefer to break out the fall colors such as dark florals, warm browns, burgundies, olive greens and golden tans. Neutral colors like cream, beige and black work well in both seasons.

3. Layer it On. As you know, the key to transitioning from summer to fall is to be prepared with layers. Style your outfits with a blazer, jacket or sweater that you can remove if the temperatures heat up. The fun part about transitional styling is you don’t have to wear an overcoat, so you can wear complete and cohesive outfits that will actually be seen!

Transitional Summer to Fall Outfit High and Low

You can achieve the look with the high-end designer pieces (on the left) or lower priced items to save you some cash (on the right). Take your pick and wear it high or low, or mix them up for high low styling.

The Tweed Jacket

This classic rag & bone Carmen wool jacket for $728 comes in this gorgeous burgundy and it will become a mainstay in your wardrobe. Or you can pick up this NIC+ZOE Fringe Knit Jacket for only $198. The less expensive tweed jacket has trendier styling with zippered pockets and gold buttons on the sleeves and may not stay in your closet forever. But it will give you a very similar look for less. Besides, you may like the fact that it is a stretchy knit.

The Dark Floral Top

A light and airy top like this The Great The Porch Floral Top for $265 is ideal for making the transition from summer to fall. It has a beautiful print, flattering neckline and is 100% Cotton. But if you want to save $179 and if you like longer sleeves, this Vince Camuto Pintuck Flutter Sleeve Top with a similar print is only $89.

Cream Colored Denim Jeans

Save your dark and heavy black or blue denim jeans for later this year! A chic way to transition to fall is with a pair of cream, off white or ivory colored jeans. And while you’re at it, you may like to update your denim wardrobe with a pair of straight or wide leg jeans tha are on trend. These TOTÊME Twisted Seam Straight Leg Jeans in Washed Beige for $390 are styled to perfection. They brighten up this entire outfit and contrast well with the dark floral top. However, If the price seems a bit steep, you can pick up these Madewell The Perfect Wide Leg Jeans in Vintage Canvas for only $128.

The Clogs

I became a huge fan of these Veronica Beard Hendrix Clogs for $395 when I tried them on at Nordstrom. They are truly comfortable and I did not have any fear of falling down in them, even with their 3-1/2″ height. I also found these Cordani Zorba Clogs, $188.95 with a very similar silhouette (sans the cute buckle) if you would like a lower priced option. I know they are still not cheap, but comfort is key when it comes to clogs.

The Woven Hobo Bag

When transitioning from summer to fall you may not want to carry a hard-edged or super heavy handbag. This Bottega Veneta Jodie mini intrecciato leather tote is the ultimate when it comes to soft and luxurious bags. But you also will pay the ultimate price of $5,200 for this amazing hobo-style bag. But you can get a sort of similar look for a whole lot less with this JINMANXUE Store Handmade Woven Hobo Tote on Amazon for only $59.99. Of course it is faux leather, but you also get a mini-zipper clutch along wit h this bag.
