Get ready to shop this summer!

After a long and harsh winter in Chicago, the summer is a time to step out and reward yourself with a pile of pretty things. Now it will be even easier, thanks to the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association who is currently planning a two-week retail and restaurant event to take place in the late summer. The event, called the Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival, is slated to run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 8, a typical slow period for the Mag Mile since its just after back to school shopping but before any major holidays.

The event is geared to boost sales from both the local demographic who are just getting back into the the spending mood after a long recession-caused drought, as well as the international tourists. The GNMAA, which represents stores on the Mag Mile, is gearing up to work with shopping tour operators overseas, especially in the booming market of China, to bring more tourists to the avenue.

Highlights in the festival plans include celebrity chef appearances, trunk shows, designer events, street performances and deals. Shoppers, as they spend, will also rack up points that can be exchanged for the raffle tickets for ultra fancy prizes such as a five-day stay at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park hotel's presidential suite, worth $20,000. So start clearing those credit card statements now Chicago, because they'll be getting a serious shopping workout by the end of the summer. We'll keep you posted as we find out more!
