The weather is finally beautiful on a consistent basis! Just because we are all still social distancing and not going to events with large crowds doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your time outside and wear a new pair of shoes for summer. There are many different styles of comfortable sandals, sneakers, slides and flats that are in style right now and can be worn with everything from dresses to denim to midi skirts. Here are the best summer 2020 footwear trends and where to get them for less.
Summer 2020 Footwear Trends for Less
Low Block Heel Sandals
Strappy sandals with a low block heel are still a chic, trendy statement that came with the wave of 90’s trends that previously made a comeback. I like these sandals from Dolce Vita because they’re understated and feminine. I think of faux snakeskin the same as I do leopard print. In my eyes python print is always a neutral with endless styling possibilities. These sandals would be perfect for a situation where you want to look polished but don’t want your feet to hurt after standing too long. I would normally suggest a wedding, but maybe in this unique situation a fancy backyard party? They would look beautiful with a silk top and midi skirt or maxi dress.
Wrap Sandals with a Pop of Color
These wrap sandals from Free People combine two fun trends – ankle ties and a pop of color. I liked them so much I bought them for myself for drinking wine on the rooftop or hanging out at the pool (responsibly of course!). The ankle ties aren’t too crazy and won’t make you look disproportionate like some shoes that tie way too high on your legs. They’re comfortable and match with many outfits. You can wear these with anything from jeans to a maxi dress.
Colorful, Everyday Slides
If you’re a fan of Birkenstocks but not their price tag, you’re in luck. The brand has released some new colorful, waterproof versions of their sandals at about a third of the cost. They come in many colors from metallic silver to pink to neutrals, and are ideal for everyday errands or spending time outside in the yard or pool because they’re waterproof. These are the perfect casual summer sandal that will last more than one season.
I have several pairs of feminine, ballet-inspired flats that I’ve worn over the years. They’re so versatile and go with everything from a sundress to jeans and a tee shirt. This pair from ASOS is another example of a perfect pair. They are elegant and classic. You’ll always get a good cost-per-wear return on investment with a pair of black flats that go with everything!
Espadrille Loafer Mules
If you’re looking to nail two trends at once, this pair of espadrille mules from ASOS would be easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. They’re summery with their espadrille bottom and also bring the trendy loafer look that Gucci made popular many season ago. They’re slip-on mules, so they’re perfect for the warmer weather. These would look sophisticated paired with denim or a casual summer dress for everyday wear.
I’m a huge fan of Vans for their comfort and quality and love these new sneakers they released for summer, available from Urban Outfitters. The sneakers aren’t too ‘in your face, I’m obviously wearing Vans’ like some other styles from the brand. The styling on these Vans Sport Suede sneakers is a lot more subtle. The cream sneakers come in two pretty colored stripes, either a fresh green or lipstick red that adorn the simple design. These will last you multiple seasons if you keep them clean and pair with everything from denim to a midi skirt. Although my grandma would disagree because she’s always telling me not to wear my Vans with skirts! But if you keep your outfit polished and make sure the colors make sense together, I say go for it!
Summer 2020 Footwear Trends Styling Tips
- The strappy 90’s block heel sandals are still in style. Consider buying a pair in plain black or snakeskin instead of a crazy neon color to keep from going overboard on trends.
- Wrap sandals are still fun and stylish. Ensure you don’t buy a pair that has a crazy wrap that goes too far up your calves, otherwise your legs will appear to be cut short.
- A pair of colorful, waterproof slides for everyday wear are a good investment. Especially since the waterproof version is less expensive than the non-waterproof material for brands such as Birkenstock
- A pair of classic flats in a neutral color are always on-trend. Find a pair that works for your style with a pretty ankle strap, pointed toe, etc.
- Loafer-inspired footwear can be worn in summer too. There are slip-on options that incorporate fun espadrille styles for summer.
- When pairing sneakers with something more unexpected, like a dress or skirt, keep your outfit looking polished by ensuring the colors compliment each other and keep accessories to a minimum.
