’Tis the season for layering and, really, there’s nothing we love more than a great fall jacket. It almost makes up for the colder weather! This is especially true when you add some serious tailoring and unique touches like high stand collars, a wrap front or princess seams.
Structured jackets have a way of making even the simplest outfit look instantly more polished. Throw one over jeans and a tee, pair it with trousers for the office or use it to add some polish to a softer, more casual look. And while an oversized or boxy jacket certainly has its usefulness, this season we’re seeing plenty of styles that put the focus back on the waist and the overall silhouette.
Structured Jackets for Fall
If you love a great structured jacket as much as we do, now is the time to bring out your classics and invest in a new favorite if you’re in the market. Here are some of our favorites…

Stand Collars
We love a face-framing collar, especially when it comes with a little tailoring. This nipped-waist version from Lioness Trophy Club at Bloomingdale’s has a distinctly polished feel.
This one from Mango is a little straighter and more streamlined. Either way, a stand collar is an easy way to make a basic jacket feel much more special. This style looks especially chic when worn fully closed and buttoned up to the top.
Princess Seams
Take your average blazer and give it an hourglass silhouette. That’s what we’re seeing in stores right now. Princess seams add structure without necessarily making a jacket feel stiff, and if you love to highlight your waistline, we’re big fans. This Avec Les Filles houndstooth version would be amazing with dark denim, but don’t be afraid to wear it with trousers or even an A-line skirt. The fit and shape do all the work.
Wrap Fronts
A jacket with an asymmetrical wrap front is a great statement piece that you can pair with basic trousers or denim and instantly look interesting and put together. The diagonal lines are flattering, too, and can make a simple outfit feel much more thoughtful. We love this ASOS Design blazer in chocolate brown, the latest hot neutral.
Or this navy option from Joe’s Jeans for a slightly more classic take.
Peplums
Yes, this shape is back. If you hate it, just keep moving. But if you love it, now is your chance to embrace it again. The key to making a peplum feel fresh this time around is choosing one with a more modern silhouette rather than going full retro. We like the softer knit of this zip-front variation from Simkhai, which gives you the waist-defining shape without feeling overly precious. Pair it with straight-leg or wide-leg pants to balance out the proportions.
Ultra-Cropped Jackets
This is another polarizing shape, but we do have to admit it looks fantastic with wide-leg pants. The contrast between a super-short jacket and a fuller trouser creates a great silhouette and keeps the proportions from getting lost. Try this DKNY style with vegan leather trim and baggy jeans for a city-girl look.
Or go preppier with this Ralph Lauren number and its equestrian gold buttons. Either way, go for a statement jacket that makes the outfit rather than simply finishing it.
