Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring '12. Zang Toi's North African Dream

Summary: Anyone whose ever attended a Zang Toi runway before, knows they are always in for a show, This season was no exception with the designer’s spring ’12 collection titled “My Dream of North Africa.” The first look took the theme quite literally as the opening look came out, resplendent in an African-looking headpiece and 23k bordered coat, though it did translate into more wearable garments as the show went on. Desert-colored day wear included silk gazar trousers and linen trenches, which gave way to sleek black cashmere blazers and jacquard mini dresses.
The collection itself, was actually quite tame for the designer, known for his elaborate embellishments and dramatic shapes. Yet there was plenty of that to be had as well, as Toi’s North African landscape turned into more of an Arabian night. Sapphire blue (which has been everywhere this season) dominated the latter half of the collection in evening fabrics such as silk organza, Italian silk, chiffon and crystal. The looks, though theatrical, were true visions of luxury and the audience seemed to appreciate the spectacle as they clapped for nearly every piece that came down the runway. The final coup de gras that no one really expected, was a guest appearance by Kirstie Alley who, though somewhat out of place, did look regal in a “One Thousand and One Night” bejeweled imperial coat and matching silk gazar gown.
