Jason Wu‘s New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 collection played to the real woman. The woman who gets up and rules the office during the day, the family during the evening and takes some time to have fun during her weekend. The collection was inspired by Ugo Rondinone, a Swiss-born mixed media artist who is well-known for Seven Magic Mountains, an installation of seven neon stone totems painted in bright yellows, purples and other colors, constructed from car-size stones located just outside of Las Vegas. Though the inspiration for the pieces could be perceived as a little avant garde, the finished product is far from it. His pieces can perfectly be incorporated into your existing closet but with unexpected and fun details that will keep you on trend in the new season.

The collection featured strong separates, perfect for work, as well as soft and ethereal but wearable dresses and jumpsuits, with a handful of overcoats and toppers peppered throughout. Silhouettes varied from daytime pieces like structured jackets softened with contrasting silk details and sharp ankle pants to flowing dresses and silk separates that were perfect for the weekend warrior. The sheer fabric trend was highly visible throughout the collection, with sheer blouses and dresses adorned with floral embroidery, simple sheer garments draped to perfection with poppy neon trim accents and mixed pattern sheer dresses and jumpsuits featuring pleats, ruffles and ruching to create a depth to the fabric that would seemingly be difficult to achieve on such a fragile textile.

The color story in the collection was fairly subtle but what packed a punch were the embroideries and trims that featured highly saturated neon yellows and oranges with pops of blue. The base pieces were constructed in simple navy, black, a nude with a few standout pieces in coral, bright yellow and burgundy. Some of my favorite pieces in this collection was the nude sheer cold shoulder top with contrasting yellow trim with matching wide leg pants, the sheer black strapless ballgown with neon applique flowers, and a sheer burgundy sleeveless jumpsuit with body hugging ruched seams.
