What To Wear When It Feels Like 200 Degrees!
Some summer days don’t just feel hot, they feel downright unbearable. I know the thermometer may never actually hit 200 degrees, but the combination of heat and humidity can certainly make it seem that way. We’ve already had a few stretches of hot, humid weather this season and chances are we’ll see another heat wave before summer is over.
The good news? Summer sales are happening now, making it the perfect time to stock up on pieces that will keep you cool and comfortable. The right fabrics, silhouettes and accessories can make all the difference when the temperatures soar.

How to Stay Cool in Hot and Humid Weather
Lightweight Natural Fabrics
Choose breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, gauze, eyelet, and lightweight open weaves. These materials allow air to circulate and help keep you cooler on even the hottest days. Whenever possible, skip heavier synthetic fabrics that tend to trap heat and moisture.
If you’re wondering which materials perform best in extreme heat, be sure to read our guide to the best fabrics for hot weather.
Light Colors
White, ivory, soft pastels, and bright colors reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it, helping you stay cooler. Dark shades like black and navy tend to hold onto heat, making them less comfortable on sweltering days.
Loose-Fitting Styles
When it’s hot and humid, loose silhouettes are your friend. Easy dresses, wide-leg pants, breezy tops and relaxed skirts allow air to circulate around your body instead of clinging to it.
More Coverage Can Actually Keep You Cooler
It sounds surprising, but lightweight long sleeves, maxi dresses and longer skirts can actually help protect your skin from direct sunlight while keeping you comfortable. Just be sure to wear sunscreen on exposed (and even covered up) skin, since UV rays can still penetrate some lightweight fabrics.
Need More Outfit Ideas?
If you’re looking for even more inspiration, I shared a collection of summer outfits for women over 50 a few years ago. While many of the exact pieces have sold out, the styling ideas are still relevant. You’ll find plenty of outfit formulas you can recreate with new summer fashions or even items you already own.
The Best Summer Clothes for Hot and Humid Weather
Here are some of my favorite Summer 2026 picks that will help you stay cool while looking chic. Whether you’re heading to work, brunch, vacation or simply running errands, these pieces make dressing for hot weather much easier.
Midi Dress
This crisp cotton shirtdress easily goes from the office to bridal showers, lunch with friends or summer parties. Its relaxed fit, cap sleeves, and belt-free silhouette make it ideal for super-hot weather.
Ann Taylor Weekend Striped Pleated Midi Shirtdress, $79.99
Maxi Dress
A lightweight maxi dress is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Wear it to outdoor cookouts, vacation dinners or even as a chic beach cover-up.
CeCe Shirred Waist Maxi Dress, now $104.25
Flutter Sleeve Top
A breezy flutter sleeve top pairs beautifully with white jeans, linen pants, shorts or skirts. It also layers easily under a blazer for chilly air-conditioned offices.
Sugarlips Siya Heidy Floral Flutter Sleeve Cotton Top, $55
Long Sleeve Shirt
It may sound counterintuitive, but a lightweight long-sleeve cotton gauze shirt can actually help keep you cooler while protecting your arms from the sun. Wear it open over a tank or buttoned up with linen pants.
Rails Ellis Cotton Gauze Button-Up Shirt, $178
Lightweight Topper
If you’re wearing a camisole or sundress, an airy open-weave cardigan (in cotton crochet or lace) adds just enough coverage without adding warmth.
Ann Taylor Pointelle Short Sleeve Cardigan, now $35
Easy Linen Pants
When it feels like 200 degrees outside, I usually skip jeans, even my beloved white ones. Linen pants become my summer uniform because they’re breathable, comfortable and polished enough for almost any occasion.
Gap Linen-Blend Easy Barrel Pants, $79.95
Long Shorts
Bermuda shorts are a chic alternative to shorter styles and offer a little extra coverage. Choose a lightweight fabric and look for a length that hits just above or at the knee, similar to your most flattering skirt length.
Rerformation Sandy Short, $148
Linen Maxi Skirt
If dresses aren’t your thing, a lightweight linen skirt is just as cool and comfortable. An elastic waist makes it easy to wear with everything from a simple tank or tee to a dressier blouse.
Quince 100% European Linen Maxi Skirt, $49.90
Cotton Tee
Every summer wardrobe needs a great white T-shirt. Choose cotton in white, a cheerful pastel or a bright color to pair with linen pants, skirts or shorts all season long.
perfectwhitetee Hendrix V Neck Tee, $78
How to Accessorize for Hot and Humid Weather
- Choose lightweight sandals, espadrilles or breathable canvas sneakers instead of heavy leather shoes.
- Keep jewelry simple with delicate chains, hoop earrings, pearls, raffia, resin or shell accents.
- Carry a straw, woven, canvas, crochet or rattan handbag which add texture without adding weight.
- A top-handle bag keeps it away from your body, while a lightweight crossbody is perfect when you want to stay hands-free.
- Don’t forget a wide-brim hat and a great pair of sunglasses for extra sun protection.
Dressing for extreme summer heat doesn’t mean sacrificing style. By choosing breathable fabrics, lighter colors, relaxed silhouettes and lightweight accessories, you’ll stay cool, comfortable and pulled together no matter how high the temperatures climb.
Here’s hoping we never actually see 200-degree weather. But when it feels like it, you’ll be ready!
