We are midway through July, and can you believe there are already discussions of back-to-school plans? If you’ve got school-aged kiddos, the hustle of all things back-to-school is hard to ignore. New school supplies, clothes and other school essentials for the kids are eminent, but you can insert some fun into the back-to-school shopping by throwing a few items in your shopping cart for you. I love the idea of jumping on the bandwagon and enjoying a grown-up version of back-to-school shopping, whether you have children or not. Let’s look at some fun clothing and accessory pieces to enjoy regardless of your parenting status.
Back-To-School Shopping for You
I remember the excitement of back-to-school shopping with my mom when that time came at the end of every summer. I’ll admit that I’m excited to do that with my children as well. I remember my mom never splurging on things for herself, and that’s one tradition I plan to break on my family shopping trips.

Tops And Jackets
One of the first places I’ll start is getting a few cool graphic tees when I’m grabbing some for my son. I found this one from Anthropologie. I love it because it’s got a subtle design and it’s not so in your face.

Also, you know how much I love a button-down shirt, so I was delighted to find this button back top from Lucky Brand. It’s a basic button front in front, but those functional buttons in the back make for a fun detail. And it’s nice for those you what want to show a little peek-a-boo skin. Or you. can layer it over a monochrome or contrasting color tee or tank.

We are still in the height of summer, but it’s not too early to start thinking ahead to a couple of lightweight outerwear pieces for the early fall. I found this Splendid Breck Indigo Jacket that is a different take on a classic denim style. The breezy fabric and the elastic waistband make this an option I’d choose over a standard jacket.

I also found this Always Effortless Classic-Fit Jacket from lululemon. It’s lightweight, hooded, breathable and comes in a rainbow of colors.

Back-To-School Pants
I’m always on the lookout for my new favorite pair of pants. I’ve made it no secret that high-waist wide leg has been my go-to, so when I found these Stretch Twill Wide Leg Pants from Spanx, I had to give them a try. These would be perfect for wearing to work or running out during the weekend with the kids (when I want to look a little more polished). I’d throw on my Adidas Sambas and a relaxed fit graphic tee to finish my weekend look.

Another good, relaxed option for stay-at-home moms or weekend warriors are these High Rise Cargo Pants from Athleta. I’ve heard nothing but good things about these pants and was recently just recommended them by my friend with kids my age. She raved about how they are so comfortable, yet flattering when out with the littles. They also are perfect for those little league sports events that can last all day long.

Finally, if you are a tried-and-true jeans gal, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have more jeans than a person should have, so I’m always looking for an pair with interesting details. I love these black side-striped jeans from Express. The contrast of the black stripes and pockets against the indigo is striking and gives such an interesting visual to the jeans. The raw hem is also an unexpected detail that makes these jeans such a fun pair.

Shoes And Bags
Whether you’re playing chauffeur for your kids, an empty nester enjoying an afternoon out or heading off to the office, investing in a nice, fashionable bag to haul your stuff is always a great idea. Personally, I like a classic tote bag like this Soho Suede Tote Bag from Mark and Graham. The bright color choices and the options to personalize it with your initials are what make this bag so special.

If you prefer a backpack, I found this Italian Leather Backpack that is minimalist and chic. It comes in three muted color options to keep the look classy and elevated.

As of late, I’ve leaned into comfortable shoes over heels. When I was looking for shoe options, I was drawn to a couple of sneaker options that can pair well with different styles of bottoms. My first choice would be these Leopard Print Sneakers. Even though I’ve made the switch to casual, comfy shoes, I still love a bold choice. So, these are fun options if you like a highly impactful shoe. These are also on sale for only $40, so they are a great deal.

For a subtle option, try these Stitchlite™ Wingtip Oxfords by Cole Haan. They are a step up from your classic sneakers but are still just as comfortable. I also like these because they pair just as nicely with a pair of work trousers as ballet flats or heels can.
Expert Style Tips
- Your style, your choice. The back-to-school time of year can mean different things to different women, depending on where you are in life. So, whether that means casual and comfortable for a life that heavily involves kid-related activities or doing something special for yourself because you are child free or an empty nester; it’s entirely up to you!
- This is the perfect time to replace or upgrade. Maybe your favorite sneakers are on their last leg, or your favorite t-shirt or jeans is threadbare. Take this opportunity to go on the hunt for some new, special pieces.
- Hit the end of season sales. This time is year is ripe with clearance and end of season sales to make room for the fall/winter shipments that will be hitting in August and September. Take advantage of the low prices. Some of the pieces you may have had your eye on all year may be priced to sell.
Happy shopping!
