We are nearing that transitional time of year where we go from summer to fall. And if I buy anything new, I would like to get some wardrobe mileage. I want to buy now, wear now, and also wear later when it gets cooler in the months ahead. In fact, now that I’m over 50, I prefer to find pieces that I know I will wear and love not only now and later… but forever!
Buy Now, Wear Now and Forever
The beauty of growing younger is knowing what you like, and what “your style is” because you have actually been there and done that. You have lived it. You have tried, tested and worn certain fashion items over the decades of your lifetime. And at this point you know what you have always liked and what has worked for you. You know your own style!
I put together a short list of fashion pieces that fit my style, which has become more practical as I get older. So here are 5 pieces on my recent shopping list that I know I will wear now, later and forever. Perhaps you would like to add them to your list, too. Or hopefully these pieces will inspire you to revisit some of the fashion items that you have always worn and loved.

1. A Chambray Shirt
A chambray blue shirt is flattering on almost everyone! I had a shirt like this in the 70s and I love it to this day. A long sleeve button front shirt is totally appropriate for women over 50. It is fabulous now in the summer with white jeans or floral skirts. It left unbuttoned as a jacket. Later it will look chic with black leather pants or jeans, or under a menswear tweed blazer.
2. A Little Black Dress
You can’t have too many black dresses, and they can serve many functions. A midi length, v-neck, sleeveless, fit and flare style like this LBD is flattering and easy to wear. It is one to buy now, wear now and later. I’d like to wear it now casually as a sundress, and also be able dress it up and wear it as a cocktail dress later or for any time of year.
3. Super-faded Jeans
Besides wearing white jeans, super light faded denim is a cool and crisp way to go in warm weather. The wide legs on this pair remind me of jeans I wore in the 90s. I’d wear these pants now in summer with a white t-shirt, a black tank or a white button front shirt along with bold metallic jewelry. Later I’d wear them with a black turtleneck, a leather belt and black boots.
4. Cowboy Boots
Speaking of boots, I’ve always been into studded boots and short cowboy boots, so this leather ankle bootie is just what I want. Cowboy boots never go out of style and they happen to be back on trend, once again. I can wear these boots now with long cotton skirts or dresses and later with denim jeans, wool trousers or with a sweater dress and tights.
5. A Small Nylon Cross-body Bag
I no longer need it as a “bar purse” but a lightweight cross-body bag that holds all my essentials (phone, sunglasses, lipstick, money, debit card and ID) is one handbag style I have used and and always will. I have a similar nylon cross-body, but could use another one! I’d like it to wear to go walking, hiking or to an outdoor summer event such as a concert for now. And later I would use it for a kids football game or for hands-free holiday shopping!
Do you already own one of these fashion items or would you like to add one to your wardrobe? What fashion item do you wear repeatedly and know you will love forever?
