One of my favorite shoe styles is—and always has been—the closed-toe mule. There’s the ease of slipping them on, the clean, sleek silhouette, and that comforting “foot hug” they give while still keeping your toes safe and covered. And at the end of the day, you can just slide them right off. They’re perfect.
Mules are a style I will continue to wear no matter what is trending. And after browsing around online and in stores, it looks like closed-toe mules are not only still around—they’re stronger than ever. From designer splurges to wallet-friendly twins, there are endless options to choose from this season.
Closed-Toe Mules: Splurge vs Steal
Here are some of the best closed-toe mule styles for fall and winter for women over 50, including a mix of luxe picks and similar looks for much less. You can choose to splurge or get a pair for a steal this seaon.

Shearling Loafer Mules
The shearling-lined Gucci Princetown horsebit mule has been around for more than a decade and is now a modern classic. If you want to invest in the original, it’s absolutely worth it. But if you want to explore the look without the luxury price tag, BCBGeneration makes a faux-fur version that lets you dip your toe in the trend (yes… pun intended).
Gucci Princetown Genuine Shearling Mule, $1,130
BCBGeneration Zorie Faux Fur Bit Mule, $99
Wedge Mules

These geometric Alaïa Cube Wedge mules are all the rage right now, and for good reason. The proportions are flawless, and the black suede makes them incredibly chic. If they’re within your budget, they’re absolutely worth the splurge. But you can get a similar look—with a slightly lower heel and even lower price point with this black satin pair from Reformation.
Alaïa Cube 75 Suede Wedge Mules, $1,350
Reformation Marilyn Wedge Mule, $298

Silver Statement Mules
For dressier occasions, a metallic mule is always a power move. These gorgeous crinkled silver mules from Christian Louboutin deliver instant drama (and compliments). But if you’d rather save over $1,000, DKNY has a similar pointed-toe mule that gives you shimmer without the splurge.
Christian Louboutin Miss Z Slimimule, $1,095
DKNY Cadena Slip-On Mule Pump, now $69.50

Black Bow Mules
Walk into a room with bows on your toes. They are ideal for formal occasions, but I like the surprise contrast of styling them with faded blue jeans as well. These kitten-heel mules from Valentino Garavani combine elegance with comfort. If you’d like something with a much smaller investment, Jack Rogers offers a chic bow mule that delivers the same ladylike vibe.
Valentino Garavani Yolande Bow Mule, $1,250
Jack Rogers Cynthia Bow Mule, $158

Suede Shearling-Lined Clogs
These suede flatform shearling clogs from Fendi make a major statement—and you might find yourself wearing them every day. If you love the look but not the price, Veronica Beard has a stylish shearling mule in a similar style for less.
Fendi Après Chic FF Logo Genuine Shearling Lined Clog, $1,190
Veronica Beard Fenix Studded Shearling Mule, $425

Sneaker Mules
I love the styling of Golden Goose sneakers, and this shearling-lined slip-on mule version is perfect for cooler weather (and truly year-round). But they’re pricey for a sneaker—so Vintage Havana offers a similar laid-back mule at a much friendlier price.
Golden Goose Sabot Leather Glitter Star Slide Sneakers, $795
Vintage Havana Baller Slip-On Sneaker, $79.99

Ballerina Mules
These Christian Louboutin ballerina mules are truly to die for with their sculptural heel and flattering cut. But if you adore ballet-inspired shoes and want something simpler (and far less expensive), Jack Rogers has a classic flat mule option.
Christian Louboutin Sweetie Jane Ballerina Mule, $745
Jack Rogers Ginny Flat Mule, now $57.99

Minimalist Brown Suede Mules
Leave it to The Row to make the perfect minimalist mule. They look incredibly comfortable—but the luxury price is definitely not for the faint of heart. For a cozy and wearable alternative, UGG offers soft, suede slip-on mules that deliver comfort at a much easier price point.
The Row Hudson Fur Lined Suede Mule, $1,460
UGG Elea Waterproof Suede Slipper Mule, $124.95
How to Style Closed-Toe Mules
Slip them for both day or evening. They work beautifully with:
- Straight or wide-leg jeans and a chunky sweater
- Tailored trousers for polished office days
- Midi dresses or skirts, with tights when needed
- Evening gowns and pants with bows, heels or metallics
- Chic monochrome looks, especially in neutrals
Closed-toe mules are one of the easiest ways to look pulled together with very little effort.
Some shoe trends come and go—but closed-toe mules are a forever favorite for many of us. They’re comfortable, stylish, polished and totally wearable. Whether you splurge on a designer pair that will last for years or pick up a more affordable version to try-out the trend, you can’t go wrong.
Which style would you choose—and would you splurge or steal?
