The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) held its annual awards ceremony last night at New York’s American Museum of Natural History to honor the best in the menswear, womenswear, accessories, and fashion innovation this year. The CFDA Awards 2023, which was sponsored by Amazon Fashion, was hosted by Anne Hathaway, an actress who has made an impact on fashion in the last few years (and might I add, only looks better with age). Hathaway was a last minute step-in for Sarah Jessica Parker, who had to drop out as host due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

CFDA Awards 2023: Fashion Icon Serena Williams
Tennis star Serena Williams, who is also known for making waves in entrepreneurship and design, made history at the fashion awards by becoming the first athlete to be chosen as the 2023 Fashion Icon. Williams has been described as the “ultimate example of individuality” even going as far as to stun spectators when she stepped out onto the tennis court in a catsuit at the 2018 French Open, leading to a catsuit ban by the French Tennis Federation.
Williams has said that she aims to empower women through her clothing line S by Serena.

At the awards, Williams wore a black sequin dress by CFDA Chairman Thom Browne and arrived in a custom-wrapped Lincoln Navigator SUV that matched the bespoke ensemble. She wasn’t the only one wearing black that night, as that was a running theme, honoring the dress code “American Black Tie” except for the few bright spots. There was quite a bit of red and yellow on the red carpet as well as that beautiful denim blue Ralph Lauren ensemble worn by Anne Hathaway which was ideal for the American theme.
CFDA Awards 2023 Best Dressed
Here were the other standouts of the night:

Demi Moore was on hand to present pal Gwyneth Paltrow with the innovation award for her brand Goop. Moore shined in a gorgeous embellished silver strapless midi dress from Carolina Herrera’s Spring 2024 collection.

No stranger to color or bold, unique looks, Chloe Sevigny wore a canary yellow Christopher John Rogers dress to the CFDA Awards. “I love that he’s an emerging designer,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Wearing crimson Zac Posen from 2017, actress Molly Ringwald arrived with the designer on her arm. Posen may have shut down his brand, but he still had something special for the star.

I love this sculpted gown worn by Saweetie to the awards ceremony, and it’s in an interesting color, too.

And then of course there were the black gowns that made a statement.

Like Demi Moore, Naomi Watts also wore a look from Wes Gordon’s Spring 2024 collection for Carolina Herrera.
