One of my favorite trends for spring 2020 is what we are calling casual luxe. This style has been brewing for quite some time, but Tom Ford totally defined this look in his Spring 2020 RTW Collection. He showcased solid color combinations of satin ball gowns paired with comfy looking t-shirts with gathered up sleeves. Other designers also styled looks with the casual luxe trend, where it was one part casual and one part total luxury.
At Sally LaPointe, soft knit tops and ponchos were shown with luxe satin or sequin pants. Does Van Noten paired menswear style tanks with full skirts and skirts with ruffles, and a look at Giambattista Valli featured a red satin pajama shirt with a dressy white lace skirt. Many other designers including Brandon Maxwell, Dries van Noten, Versace, Givenchy and Akris showed this mix of casual and luxury in their spring 202 collections.
What is The Casual Luxe Trend?
Casual luxe is mixing comfortable casual fashion pieces like cotton t-shirts, tanks, button down shirts and lightweight knits with luxe fabrics including satin, silks, sequins, lace, leather, chiffon and other fabrics that are appropriate for evening wear. It works so well because there is a noticeable contrast, but overall the look is relaxed yet dressy.
I applaud the trend because it is totally modern and I think it’s the way women like to dress today. We want to to be comfortable, yet we like to put on the glamour and glitz. We don’t like things that are too complicated or fussy. So what better way is there to dress than in casual luxe for a cocktail party or elegant event? This look is ideal for occasions when you are not sure if evening wear or casual attire is appropriate. The casual luxe trend will save the day (or evening).
How To Wear The Casual Luxe Trend
The key to mastering the trend is to be bold with the luxury piece in your ensemble. Take it from the designers. The satin ball skirts at Tom Ford were lush and billowing and the trousers at Sally Lapointe fluid and shimmering. This look is appropriate for women over 40, because it is not too revealing.
Here are some casual luxe outfit ideas for women over 40.
Let’s dissect the look at Giambattista Valli, where he styled a white piped pajama top (casual) with a lacy white midi skirt with an oversized bow (luxe). You can style similar outfit with the top from a pair of classic satin pajamas and a white lace midi skirt. Tie your own oversize bow around your waist with two yards of wide white lace ribbon. Then slip on comfortable round toe ankle strap shoes.

Now let’s look at Tom Ford’s look. You could buy one of Tom Ford’s Double Silk Duchesse Ball Skirt with Pockets for $4,250 or find a similar skirt. Pair this black full skirt with a cap sleeve or short sleeve tee in a bright color. You can even roll up the sleeves around your shoulders like the runway models. I recommend a pima cotton or high quality tee when you’re styling a tee with a satin ball skirt. Wide ankle strap metallic sandals complete this outfit.

Sally Lapointe showed monochromatic, draped ensembles with plenty of shine and shimmer. You can accomplish a similar feeling with a lightweight knit sweater, wrap or poncho. This poncho-style top with satin pants and pointed mules will give you the same Sally Lapointe casual luxe look.
