We’re reaching that point in the summer where it is still super hot out and you’ll (hopefully) be spending plenty of time by the beach and the pool. If you’re anything like us, however, you’re probably already sick of your bathing suit collection at this point. Plus, the second half of summer is a great time to stock up on swimwear in general, since this is when retailers start marking things down. And you can stock up for next summer and any vacations you might take throughout the year. Here are some of our favorite swimwear looks including the best one piece swimsuits to wear when you’re over 40.
Best One Piece Swimsuits To Wear
One Shoulder Swimsuits
One shoulder silhouettes are probably the most popular styles this season, and for good reason. They highlight the collarbone and the asymmetry draws the eye around the body in an extremely flattering way. We’re loving this black and white Ralph Lauren number with its tie at the shoulder. Or if you want to combine two trends, this leopard print one piece by Rixo has an optional spaghetti strap if you’re liking the single shoulder look but want a little more security.
Tankinis With Boy Short Bottoms
If you like a more coverage on the bottom, tankini styles with boy shorts can be a great choice. You get the look of a one piece swimsuit with the comfort of a 2 piece. This tankini by Tempt Me is a colorful steal at Amazon. (Don’t overlook Amazon when it comes to swimwear – free shipping with Prime allows you do a lot of trying before you buy in the comfort of your own home instead of a chilly dressing room with unflattering lighting.) Mix up your tops with a black and white tie-dye polka-dot style like this Sea Level tankini top.
Tankinis where you can mix and match the bottoms and tops are a great way to switch things up as the summer proceeds. Besides, they are perfect for women with longer torsos who want more coverage than a bikini.
Tie Top Long Torso Swimsuits
One piece swimsuits for long torsos can be tricky, which is why we always suggest easily adjustable shoulder straps that you can tie to fit you perfectly. This Mei L’ange one piece is perfect and it’s even on sale in crisp white. This L Space Isabelle number is available in a wonderful golden yellow that would be excellent with a (faux) tan.
High Neck Sexy One Piece Swimsuits
Another great Amazon find is this sporty and chic high-necked one piece. It’s backless and cut in at the shoulders which adds some sex appeal, but the high neck and sheer stripes in the front keep you covered – and protect your delicate décotellage from the sun. This ruffled Karla Collection halter is also a good choice, and the ruffles add some coverage as well as some oomph to your bustline. There are many sexy neck sexy one piece swimsuits available.
It can be tough to find sexy one pieces that are still appropriate as you get older, but high neck styles with sheer panels or cutouts can be very good options.
Modest One Piece Swimsuits with Strappy Backs
For many of us, our backs are still a spot that we want to highlight, and there is nothing better for that than a one piece swimsuit with interesting details. This tropical print Trina Turk style or this black and white Robin Piccone one piece suit with a lace-up back both fit the bill.
Cover Up Trends When You’re Over 40
We love a sarong or a long linen button-down as a swimsuit cover-up (check the men’s section for extra length and volume). However a maxi skirt, casual cotton or linen pants, or a maxi dress might be more appropriate if you’re checking out a beach side restaurant or bar, or walking through a resort town.
Kimonos like this one by Echo are a modern option, or go cheap and cheerful with this one from Amazon. Don’t be afraid to repurpose an older maxi dress or skirt that you wouldn’t mind getting a little sand or chlorine on it either. Beach or pool cover-ups are a great way to get a second round of wear out of something that’s no longer ready for prime time, but still fine in public.
Swimwear might be one of the toughest items to shop for at any age, even if you are growing younger. But there are a ton of styles and more options than ever for those of us over 40. Look for everything from sporty tankinis to sexy one shoulder, halter and backless styles.
Have fun at the beach and pool and don’t forget the sunscreen!
