I never thought I’d like matte lipstick stains because I assumed they’d be drying and I detest my lips feeling dry. In fact, if my lips don’t feel glossy I’m uncomfortable. Hell, I keep gloss on my nightstand. However, glossy lips tend to bleed. So when I attended The Makeup Show in NYC this past weekend, I learned to give matte lip gloss stains a second chance. I’m glad I did! They have come a long way.
I was told I MUST try the Kat Von D. Everlasting Liquid Lipstick (for $20) so I did in their best selling color Lotlita (a chestnut rose). It’s a long-wear, full-coverage liquid lipstick with a smooth, matte finish. It glides over lips like a gloss and dries to a true matte finish, yet because it’s infused with vitamin E and sunflower seed your lips are left feeling comfortable. The color seriously lasts all day, even throughout meals. I will admit I have at times a touch of Chapstick here and there, but hardly reapply like I do my regular lipstick.
Another favorite is Sephora’s own house brand Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 13 Marvelous Mauve ($14) which I might almost like a touch better because these stains contain avocado oil which makes lips feel creamy all day while the color stays intense. Even for a neutral color like this mauve.
I have not tired some, but not all of the other brands shown here, but the look you are going for is matte and the feel should be anything but drying. If you have not tried a lip stain in several years it may be time to give them another look. I learned they have come a long way. Here are some matte lip gloss stains to check out now.
Note: if you are over 40 and your lips are already a bit dry and small lines are forming, the bright hues in this formula may not be for you. Stick with the more subtle colors which will be less aging.
