Lace for Days: How to Wear The Lace Trend, Plus Styling Tips

Lace has been trending for the last few seasons and while I love its romantic look, I am not really a frilly girl. I think lace is beautiful for evening wear, but I also like the idea of wearing lace during the day. The trick is finding the right pieces and knowing how to style them. Luckily, designers are incorporating lace in ways that make it much easier to wear for daytime. However, especially when paired with silky fabrics, lace can sometimes read too much like lingerie or sleepwear to me. So I set out to find lace pieces that are versatile and suitable for day, as well as a few ideas for how to style the lace trend.

What to Look for When Shopping for Lace

Look for lace details on structured fabrics. Lace appliqués, insets and trims on cotton, denim, jersey or knit fabrics are more suitable for daytime. The contrast makes the look interesting and playful. Wear overall lace with a similar-colored lining. This creates an overall textured look that can be easily mixed and matched with pieces already in your wardrobe. Look for your favorite silhouette in lace. Whether you love skirts, dresses, jackets or tops, finding a familiar silhouette in lace is an easy way to add the trend to your wardrobe while still feeling comfortable in your personal style.

1. Lace Shirt

A lace button-front shirt can work in several ways. Wear it buttoned and tucked into pants or a skirt, or layer it open over a tank top and wear it like a jacket.

2. Lace Skirt

The silky slip skirts with lace trim that I have been seeing remind me of the 1990s and early 2000s. While they can be fun for evening, they read a little too much like lingerie to me for daytime. A better option for day is an overall lace midi skirt with a lining, like this one. Picture it with a floral blouse topped with a linen blazer and pumps for the office, or wear it with a casual tank top or T-shirt and sandals or flats for a more relaxed summer look.

3. Lace Jeans

Denim jeans embellished with lace are a playful way to wear the trend. It is almost like adding jewelry to your jeans. Style them with simple pieces, such as a solid-colored T-shirt or button-front shirt, to keep the look from becoming too busy. Let the jeans make the statement.

4. Lace-Trimmed Top

Wear the lace trend on your sleeves, literally. Just a touch of lace, like the lace trim on this bright pink sweater, is all you need to get on board with the trend. A lace-trimmed top is also easy to style. Pair it with white, beige or black pants or a skirt for a simple, polished look.

5. Lace-Paneled Dress

A modest, waist-defining dress with lace panels, like this one, can work perfectly for day or night. The lace adds visual interest without making the dress feel overly delicate or fussy. Wear it with simple accessories and flats or sandals during the day, then dress it up with heels and jewelry for evening.

6. Lace-Trimmed Jacket

If you want to add just a tiny bit of lace to your wardrobe, lace shoes are an ideal way to try the trend.
