Late summer might be one of the most challenging time for anyone who’s into fashion. The temperature is likely still sweltering, but all the fall clothes are in stores and you’re likely getting tired of your summer wardrobe. Plus, there’s something about back-to-school season that has us ready to rock new looks no matter how long its been since we had our last “first day of school”.
Our Favorite Late Summer Fashion Staples
That’s when refreshing your wardrobe with a few pieces you can wear right now and use as layering items well into autumn is key, as well as remixing your current items to create ensembles that feel more current.

Here are some of our favorite ways to make the transition from summer to fall in 2022 in style…
A Black Tank
Start with a black tank or another dark neutral of your choice. An updated version of this eternal basic will stand on its own right now (and might be a perfect pairing with a bold print skirt or pants) and work as a layering piece under blazers and sweaters in the fall. We’re liking styles with a higher neckline, like this tank with a twisted detail by Sanctuary or this sleek ribbed knit by WSLY.
A Chic Hobo
For some reason we seem to need to lug around a lot more in the fall, so switching up our summer clutches and crossbodies for a larger bag is necessary. Caramel and rich cognac tones are especially hot this fall, and nothing looks quite as casually luxe as this slouchy style done with minimal hardware. We’re loving this oversized shopper from Madewell or this double-loop hobo from Cuyana.
Wide Leg Denim
Wide leg jeans or any pants of your choice are ideal for late summer. Skinny and straight leg jeans will never totally go away and there’s no denying their practicality for tucking into boots in snowier climates. But fall’s hottest silhouette has a high waist and a true wide leg that starts at the hip, like these from Hint of Blu that are a steal at $59. Or if you know that you love the look, you can always invest in the designer denim version like these Harper Jeans from Paige (available at Anthropologie).
Fun New Sneakers
The kids aren’t the only ones who should start off the school year with new kicks! We’re loving these Adidas NMDs in super bright orange for a pop of color in a trendy hue as well as these Nike Blazers in crisp white for a more retro look (these would be perfect paired with the wide leg denim mentioned above).
Something in Your Favorite Color
We fully support dopamine dressing in every way, shape, or form, so a piece in a color that makes you smile is always in style. For instance, something like this oversize cocoon coat from Meikosks via Amazon in any of the prints would definitely liven up a gray fall day, but its still light enough to throw on for those last cool summer nights. Or pick up something that you can wear all winter, like this rich emerald green velvet duster from BB Dakota by Steve Madden.

Everything starts with a good tank! I have them in so many colors!
Jeans are a favorite any time of year, but when the weather is hot and you’ve got the right
top to go with the jeans and sandals what could be better.
I agree. I just don’t love jeans when it’s sweltering, but that generally leaves a good 9 months of the year here to rock them!
These are all aligned with me… but I need to acquire the sneakers!
Which pair? I’m (orange) crushing myself.
