This is not my first post about white button-downs—and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m currently on the hunt for a new one, and as you know, I tend to take you shopping with me. Yes, I already own a few, but every spring I reassess: are they still actually white… or just pretending?
Most of what I have is oversized, so this time I’m looking for something a little more fitted—but still with a little personality (if that’s even possible in a button-down). I’m also not in the market for a $300+ designer shirt. That’s insanity in my book. If you want to spend that, you absolutely can—but I won’t be joining you.
And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’ve become much more aware of fabrics. I’m focusing on 100% cotton (or very close to it) because, frankly, the amount of chemicals in our clothing is getting out of control. So yes… this is me shopping for a white shirt while also low-key spiraling about fabric content.

1. Everylane Everyday Oxford Shirt, $118
I like this option because it’s made from 100% certified organic cotton, which uses fewer synthetic inputs, supports healthier soil, and generally requires less water than conventional cotton—so it’s better for the planet and potentially better for you, too. The fit is more relaxed and slightly longer than what I’m ideally looking for, but it’s still a strong contender.
2. The Shirt Non-Iron Icon Shirt, $135
This one is 100% cotton and I love the fit—it’s tailored, flattering, and finally solves that annoying blouse gape. I was originally drawn to the “non-iron” version, which is 100% cotton, but that wrinkle-free finish is achieved with chemical resins (often formaldehyde-based)… so that was a hard no for me. And here’s where it gets even trickier—the version you might assume is the “cleaner” option isn’t actually 100% cotton at all, but a blend (75% cotton, 20% nylon, 5% stretch). Moral of the story: read the labels, because not everything is what it seems. So I will be passing on this.
3. Lands’ End No Iron Button Front Shirt, $84.95
This one is also 100% cotton on paper—but it falls into that same “no iron” category, which means it’s been treated with chemical resins to keep it wrinkle-free. Lands’ End at least admits it, calling it a “dipping process” to soften the fabric… which sounds nice until you realize it’s still chemicals being added to your cotton. So again, just because it says 100% cotton doesn’t mean it’s actually clean—read the fine print.
4. Lole Cruise Shirt, $40
I had to do a double take on this one—under $50 and actually 100% untreated cotton? Almost suspicious. No “no-iron” claims, no mystery finishes, just breathable poplin made in Portugal with a clean label and classic fit. Proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune—or coat your clothes in chemicals—to get a great white shirt.
5. Frank & Eileen Barry Tailored Button-Up Shirt, $258
Truth be told, when it comes to button-downs, I always think of Frank & Eileen. But they’re not cheap—and let’s be honest, a white shirt can be a bit of a gamble.
That said… this one is a stunner. The Barry is 100% cotton, beautifully tailored, and actually designed to fit a woman’s body (imagine that). It hugs in the right places, has thoughtful details like the button placement and hemline, and just feels elevated. Yes, it’s an investment—but if you’re going to splurge on a white shirt, this is the kind that makes it worth it.
6. AYR The Deep End, $135
This one is definitely on the short list. The AYR Deep End is that classic, no-nonsense button-down you’re always hoping to find—clean, flattering, and actually holds its shape. It’s 100% cotton, milled in Italy, and has that elevated feel without trying too hard. No gimmicks, no weird finishes… just a really well-made shirt that does exactly what you want it to do.
7. Quince 100% Organic Cotton Poplin Long Sleeve Shirt, $39.90
Leave it to Quince. A true classic at a very reasonable price—and yes, I double checked, this one is actually 100% organic cotton without any of the added treatments. It’s crisp, lightweight, breathable, and OEKO-TEX certified, so you’re not getting any of the questionable extras. Clean, simple, and versatile—this is one of those no-brainer pieces that works for just about everything.
8. Anine Bing Essie Shirt, $250
I actually tried this on—and it is stunning. The fabric, the structure, the little details like the mother-of-pearl buttons… all so good. It’s 100% cotton poplin and has that crisp, elevated feel, but it definitely runs oversized with more of a boyfriend fit, which just isn’t what I’m looking for right now. That said, if oversized is your thing, this is a really beautiful option.

9. Old Navy Classic Button Down, now $14.99
The Old Navy Classic Button Down is honestly a steal—100% cotton twill, classic details, and a price that makes it a little less precious. I’m not crazy about the patch pocket, but for something this affordable, I can live with it… especially since it’s the kind of shirt you won’t panic over if you spill red sauce on it. In fact, grab a couple when they’re on sale and call it a day.
10. Polo Ralph Lauren Relaxed Fit Cotton Button-Up Shirt, now $126
If you see this one, grab it—because it will sell out. The Polo Ralph Lauren Relaxed Fit Button-Down is kind of the mack daddy: lightweight, airy 100% cotton, easy fit, and just one of those shirts that always looks good without trying. That said… I’m not totally sold on the polo pony (haven’t been since about 8th grade), but if you can get past that—or find a version without it—it’s a really solid, classic piece.
At this point, I’m convinced the perfect white button-down is out there… it just takes a little patience—and a lot of label reading—to find it.
