I visited Sassoon Salon in Chicago last week for a fresh, fall-inspired color and a cut — and to see what’s new! Sassoon develops a Salon Collection two seasons a year for Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter, and I couldn’t wait to see what they had come up with for this season. Sasoon Color Director, Nicole Tabloff showed me on her computer how they come up with the collections; for example, this season the influence is from modern art, fashion and architecture. Called ‘Minimum”, the collection offers clean lines, taken from the signature aesthetic of designers like Stella McCartney and Chloe, and that of the geometric modern art of Frank Stella.
“This collection looks almost more like our Academy Collection (which is extremely cutting-edge) so no one may actually ask for color exactly like one of these looks. Everyone really likes it, and I have done some subtle stripes of color for some clients. The cuts are actually very basic and quintessential Sassoon.” I told her that I love this sleek collection!
Marilyn Harmon, Sassoon Chicago’s Creative Director told me more about the success the Chicago/Northbrook Salon experienced in the Intersalon Soire, a photo presentation competition that the U.S. Sassoon salons compete in. “We won all three years since it started. We just found out we won this year with photographer David Grant,” Marilyn said. She showed me the photos and you could see a lot of movement in the shots. The styled looks were based on themes: Androgyny in 2009; Mod in 2010; and Street in 2011. I found out that their training also involves constant education and stylist are required to do live presentations throughout the year. I think this is so important because Sassoon stylists can see a bigger picture than just your hairstyle. If they can put on live presentations and style photoshoots with models, then not only are they creative, but they understand lighting, movement and how the rest of your body will look with your hairstyle.
After being amazed at learning about all of the training at the salon, I walked out with bright and natural color from Nicole and a sleek Sassoon haircut from Marilyn. To complete the look, I’m off to shop for Chloe!
