New York Fashion Week is always an explosion of trends and this season was no exception. Yet, as we age less and less seems wearable. Lauren and Carol of Fountain Of 30 have taken a long hard look at the week that was and have narrowed down the Top 10 NYFW Fall ’17 trends women over 40 can wear next fall.
NYFW Fall ’17 Trends Women Over 40 Can Wear
1. Red, Red, Red!
If there was one takeaway color, one you will need to wear next fall it’s RED! Yes there was tons of black but the one pop of color in almost every show was a shade of red. From cherry, to burgundy and everything between red was the color of the season. So figure out which shade works best for your skin tone because you will be seeing red next fall and you should be wearing it!

Designers who showed red: Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Tadashi Shoji (pictured above), Nickolas K, Sachin & Babi, Brock Collection, Brandon Maxwell, Adam Selman, Alice + Olivia, Altuzarra, Derek Lam, Kate Spade, Monse, Naeem Kahn, Narciso Rodriguez, Nicholas K, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Victoria Beckham, Zac Posen, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Bibhu Mohapatra, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera. Christian Siriano, Area, and Anna Sui.
2. Oversized Menswear Coats:
The oversized menswear inspired overcoat is a carryover from last fall, so if you bought yours already, good for you. If you got it on sale, even better for you! If you still don’t have one, get one.
Designers who showcased this coat trend: Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors, Alexander Wang (pictured above), Milly, Cushnie et Och, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Elizabeth and James, Narciso Rodriguez, Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler, The Row, Zimmerman, Noon by Noor, ZAC Zac Posen, Calvin Klein, Edun, Diane von Furstenburg, Sally LaPointe, Red Valentino, Thom Browne and Yigal Azrouël
3. Slashed Clothing:
It seems designers were slashing their garments. Not in price but literally! I’m just thrilled to see the missing material was not at the shoulders (we are so over the cold shoulder top – blah). If you want to try this trend, make sure the gouged areas on your preferred garment are in places you want exposed. Or wear a top underneath.
Designers who showed this trend: Milly, Monse, Narciso Rodriguez (pictured above), Proenza Schouler, Public School, Tadashi Shoji, Brandon Maxwell and Elizabeth and James.
4. Cropped Sweaters:
Normally we would tell you to run from any top that is cropped. However, we rather like the cropped sweater if it is worn with a menswear style white button down (or the like) underneath. It adds an element of color blocking to your outfit which we love. If your tummy is showing then we don’t love it. Crop tops were shown over dresses and with high waist skirt and trousers top fill the gap.
Crop tops shown at: Noon by Noor, Milly, Creatures of The Wind (pictured above), Public School, Oscar de la Renta, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Brandon Maxwell and Sally LaPointe.
5. Asymmetric Midis:
The midi length is quite flattering on women over 40 and the asymmetrical cut that was all over the fall runway was no exception. Whether in a dress or a skirt, get this style pronto.
Designers who showed this trend: Derek Lam, Jason Wu, Diane von Furstenberg (pictured above), Michael Kors, Milly, Monse, Nicholas K, Public School, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Zimmerman, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Cushnie et Och, Noon by Noor, Christian Siriano, Area, Yigal Azrouël and ICB.
6. Wide Leg Pants:
The cut of your pants for Fall ’17 should be wide and a bit slouchy. Some designers including 3.1 Phillip Lim, Delpozzo and Naeem Kahn even showed paper bag pants but we only recommend these if you are very slim up top and you are wearing a fitted shirt with them. Otherwise you will look like a paper bag and that’s never good.
Designers who showed wide cut pants: Erin Fetherston, Victoria Beckham, 3.1 Phillip Lim (pictured above), Zimmerman, Michael Kors, Delpozzo, Naeem Kahn, Nicholas K, Noon by Noor, ZAC Zac Posen, Brandon Maxwell, Christian Siriano, Area, Anna Sui, Edun, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenberg, Sally LaPointe, Tadashi Shoji
7. Power Pantsuit:
You might think the 90’s are back with this trend. Power pant suits were all over the runways and we loved them. Still! Especially when they were monochromatic.
Designers who showed pant suits; Narciso Rodriguez, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung (pictured above), Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Monse, Tibi, Tasashi Shoji, Victoria Beckham, ZAC Zac Posen, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Brandon Maxwell and ICB.
8. Fur Trim:
We saw fur trim lapels, fur trim cuffs and even fir trimmed dresses. Giant fur coats are out and fur trim is in!
Shown at: Derek Lam, Sally LaPointe, Tasashi Shoji (pictured above), Lela Rose, Marc Jacobs, Brandon Maxwell, Marchesa, Michael Kors, Monse, Nicholas K, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch, Jeremy Scott, Zero + Maria Cornejo, ZAC Zac Posen, Bibhu Mohapatra, Christian Siriano, Anna Sui, Cynthia Rowley, Diane Von Furstenberg, Red Valentino, Thom Browne, Yigal Azrouël, Libertine and Son Jung Wan.
9. Belted:
Praise the Lord, the belt is back! We finally can have a waist again! These are not the slim belts that go through your belt hoops either. We are talking about rather wide belts that are meant to give you waist definition. Yeah!
Belts shown at: Michael Kors, Monse. Zero + Maria Cornejo (pictured above), Derek Lam, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Jeremy Scott, Creatures of the Wind, The Row, Tibi, Monse, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Anna Sui, Edun and Ralph Lauren.
10. Velvet In Rich Colors:
Velvet made a big splash last fall and the trend continues into Fall ’17 but this time you will want to look for rich and vibrant colors! Dare to go there!
Designers who showed this trend: Monse, Tadashi Shoji, Jason Wu (pictured above), Christian Siriano, Creatures Of Comfort, Desigual, Ulla Johnson, Dion Lee, Altuzarra, Carmen Marc Valvo, Erin Fetherston, Jenny Peckham, Jeremy Scott, Nicholas K, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, The Row, Tibi, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Bibhu Mohapatra, Anna Sui, Cynthia Rowley, Sally LaPointe and Son Jung Wan.
