The 2013 People's Choice Awards: Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum, Sandra Bullock, Emma Watson, Katy Perry, Lea Michele, and More

The People’s Choice Awards don’t usually have the mega-watt gowns that come out for The Golden Globes and The Oscars, but what they do have is a spirit that’s both fun and elegant, stylish and definitely designer.  This is the time the fashionistas and A-lister can opt for mindresses or dress pants if they so choose, while those options are more frowned upon when the movie awards shows come around. This year, was no exception, with some big names coming out in clothes that might be declared more “dressed down” but they were still as powerful as ever.  There were the statement making gowns and dresses like Naomi Watt’s Alexander McQueen and Lea Michele’s sparkly pink Elie Saab minidress. And there were the unique statements that were made in the form of Heidi Klum architecturally cut leopard print lined creation and Chloe Moretz’s bright neon. While only you at home can decide on who the final winners can be, here’s who impressed us fashion-wise, at the People’s Choice Awards, and those who didn’t.

THE YES’S

Sandra Bullock was the big winner of the night and not merely because she took home a coveted humanitarian prize.  It was the first ever “Favorite Humanitarian” Award.  This Vera Wang dress is interesting because it has so much going on and yet, it isn’t too busy.  The blue strapless dress has an asymmetrical neckline with floral detail and a form fitting pinstripe pencil skirt with a leather belt.  The pink shoes make the outfit pop.

This isn’t the first time Emma Watson has worn a mixed print minidress — if you remember, she wowed in Brood at the MTV Movie Awards, and it isn’t even the first time she’s worn Peter Pilotto. She opted for his knit K Vest top and his embroidered mini skirt for the MTV Video Music Awards in 2012.  Watson is still young enough to pull off the mixed print look which might not look age appropriate on someone like Julianne Moore, and it’s obvious she likes what she’s wearing.  But we’re still not sure the People’s Choice Awards was the right place to wear this beautiful creation.

Lea Michelle almost never gets it wrong and she certainly didn’t with this beaded Elie Saab creation.  If she was looking to make a powerful, bold statement, she certainly did in this bright pink.  The short sleeves still make it look elegant and yet, even with the dress on the super short side, it seems to work for the budding singer/superstar.  It’s vibrant, young, and somehow perfect for this awards show.  Even with those matchy matchy shoes.

This is a hard one. On the one hand, I love it…on the other hand, I don’t. The colors are nice and the crystal embellishments stand out but the skirt is full and something is not right with the sleeves.  She looks like a poodle…on acid? Maybe. It’s hard for Julianne Hough to make anything look bad, even when it does.

When everyone else wears minis, Taylor Swift still wears gowns.  She wants everyone to see that she is a lady and she will conduct herself as such–even when there is something sneaky, innocent, and perhaps even childish about her.  (What was that thing with Harry Styles anyway?) The V-neck is low, but we like that she doesn’t distract with a necklace.  The cap-sleeve gown is enhanced with turquoise earrings and her elegant updo.  Soft, sweet, and sophisticated at the same time.  

Never wear wide leg trousers to an awards show, right? That’s what most people say.  Morena Baccarin likes to break the rules–at least where the People’s Choice Awards are concerned. She does so in a classy way, opting for a white jumpsuit from Donna Karan Atelier with some special details.  The top hair was encrusted with stones and included a draping waist that hit beautifully against the crepe pants.  It was truly a special sight.

Still no word on the designer behind Olivia Munn’s unique and graphic black and white creation,but one thing’s for sure, she’s one of the few that could pull it off.  Love it on her — much more so than that joke she played on Taylor Swift.

Naomi Watts was one of the best dressed of the night in Alexander McQueen Resort 2013, with a gold mesh panel that wouldn’t look right on the average person.  Then again, this Princess Diana lookalike isn’t the average person, now is she?

Where’s the risk-taking Katy Perry we all know and love? This is quiet a departure for the pop star beauty, who’s known for risk-taking ensembles at awards shows.  Still, she looked utterly sophisticated in this pretty Valentino with floral and gold detail.  Was this boyfriend John Mayer’s doing?

The No’s

Some of these could have been yes’s…if they were on the right celebrity. That being said, we love designers like Christiano Siriano, Julien Macdonald (who by the way is making waves thanks to Heidi and Kim Kardashian) and Valentino but they didn’t create the right ensembles for the girls who wore them.  Heidi Klum’s Julien Macdonald didn’t hit her right, while Chloe Moretz’s Simone Rocha was too bright.  Jennifer Lawrence wore something too bulky on top and Kaley Cuoco looked washed out.  Finally, Jennifer Aniston pulled off her leather Christian Dior, but we would have preferred to see her in something sleeker.
