Taylor Made Bags: Liz Taylor's Handbags Fetch Crazy Money at Auction

Next up…bags a la Liz! Hundreds of Elizabeth Taylor’s handbags and costume jewelry items were on the auction block yesterday, bringing in crazy amounts of money as fashion’s elite continued to spar with billionaires, millionaires and museums vying for a piece of the Hollywood icon’s famed warehouse-sized collection.
Bags, shoes, pant suits, dresses and non-precious baubles that were estimated to cost significantly less than anything in Taylor’s famed jewel collection (which fetched $137.2 million by the time the two-day gem sale ended Wednesday) brought in just under $3 million.
Scores of purses sporting high-end names like Chanel, Hermes, Valentino, Dior and Fendi sold for more than $3,000 each. An alligator bag by Cartier went for $20,000 and a alligator-skin bag by Hermes sold for a whopping $74,500. Two sets of Louis Vuitton luggage sold for $110,500 each. Christie’s had estimated the suitcases to be worth $2,000 to $3,000, but like every other item on the block, they fetched much more.
Today, Christie’s plans to sell off Taylor’s home furnishings, art and personal film memorabilia, including costumes she wore in“Cleopatra.” A framed, signed picture of her pal Michael Jackson is also expected to sell for thousands as is a painting of her by Andy Warhol.
