I’m looking forward to my annual weekend getaway with the girls this summer. This year, we’re heading to a lake house in early August, from Friday night to Sunday morning. Our plans include a bit of sightseeing and shopping, lounging by the pool, and possibly even a boat ride. On Saturday night, we’ll go out to dinner. So, I’m putting together a casual weekend travel capsule wardrobe now with pieces I’ll be able to wear for the getaway—and all summer long.
Weekend Travel Capsule Wardrobe
A weekend travel capsule wardrobe consists of versatile, mix-and-match items. I’m keeping it to 11 essential pieces: three tops, two pairs of pants, a swimsuit, a dress, two pairs of shoes, and one handbag. Beauty is another story, so be sure to check out our guide to beauty travel essentials.
One thing I know for sure—I want to travel light and not bring too many items. This helps minimize decision-making on the trip so I can just relax and enjoy myself. I’ve chosen versatile pieces that allow for layering in case the weather cools down or our plans change. A vacation is all about going with the flow!

A Casual Summer Weekend Travel Capsule Wardrobe
1. Basic T-shirt
A short sleeve white v-neck t-shirt is my choice for comfort. I would wear it with jeans and the jacket for travel and then perhaps with the white pants for brunch on Sunday.
Good American Heritage V-Neck T-Shirt, $59
2. Jeans
A lighter-wash pair of denim jeans like this is perfect for the summer months. I adore the slightly wide, barrel-leg styling.
Madewell The Darted Barrel Leg Jeans, $148
3. Swimsuit
A one-piece black swimsuit with lots of support can also double as a top when worn with jeans or white pants.
Miraclesuit® Rock Solid Revele One-Piece Swimsuit, $180
4. Sundress/ Cover Up Dress
This floral sundress makes an ideal cover-up for the pool, but it also works for a super warm-day excursion or for evening cocktails or dinner. I can throw on the jacket if the weather gets cooler.
Beach Riot Floral Print Cover-Up Maxi Sundress, $178
5. Long Sleeve Shirt
A long-sleeve shirt works well to shield you from the hot sun and can be worn over a T-shirt as a layering piece. This bold stripe looks crisp with jeans or white pants.
Whistles Cotton Striped Oversized Shirt, $159
6. Tank Top
A sleeveless tank top is a summer must-have. It can be worn on its own with white pants or layered under the jacket.
Open Edit Boat Neck Sleeveless Top, $39.50
7. White Pants
White pants are an essential summer staple, and they can look super dressy when worn with the black top.
Wit & Wisdom Skyrise Slim Straight Leg Twill Pants, $59
8. Jacket
I’m all about the sporty jacket this season! A casual bomber style offers a layer of warmth over any of the other pieces in this travel capsule collection.
Zelle In Flight Bomber Jacket, $89
9. Sneakers
Classic sneakers are a must-have for travel, especially if you plan to do a lot of walking. I like a neutral pair like these Vejas in white with a chic metallic “V.”
VEJA Women’s Recife Low Top Sneakers, $170
10. Sandals
An easy pair of black slide sandals like these will take you from poolside to shopping or walking around town.
Vagabond Shoemakers Women’s Connie Slide Sandals, $100
11. Small Crossbody Bag
Lastly, a lightweight crossbody bag with just enough room for your phone, sunglasses and a few beauty essentials is all you need for a casual summer weekend.
MZ WALLACE Small Quilted Camera Bag, $185
