Do you have a summer wedding to attend? The big question that always comes up is, “What should I wear?” I took a look and found some of the best summer wedding guest dresses for women over 50.

What makes them right for us? Women over 50 don’t want to fuss, want to be comfortable, don’t need to reveal too much skin yet still want to look appropriate. After all this is a day to honor the happy couple and we don’t need a lot of attention on ourselves. So back to the burning question…

What Should You Wear to a Summer Wedding?

I will make this simple. There are basically 3 types of weddings black tie formal, semi-formal and casual. An important rule in all cases is to avoid wearing all white or ivory so you don’t upstage the bride!

• Black tie weddings are fairly rare. If you are invited to one, evening gowns, tuxedo looks, formal pant suits or jumpsuits are in order. The men will need to wear a tuxedo or dark suit, so your dress should be up to that level.

• Semi-formal weddings are the most common. An easy way to think about what to wear is cocktail attire. Midi-length or to-the-knee cocktail dresses in bright hues, pastels or prints are the way to go. For women over 50, wear a neckline and silhouette that is personally flattering on you and choose to wear sleeves or go sleeveless.

• Casual weddings such as daytime outdoor garden parties, barbecues or beach parties are becoming more of the norm. These weddings may also put you into more of a quandary. Hopefully the invitation will note that is “casual” and if it is outdoors or on a beach, so you can be prepared with the proper footwear such as flat sandals or wedges that don’t get stuck in the grass. For a casual summer wedding a sundress or jumpsuit in a lightweight cotton or breezy fabric will keep you cool and you will look appropriate. Even though it is “casual” it is always better to dress up. After all it is a wedding. And we believe it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Also included in each of these three categories is a jumpsuit, because sometimes who doesn’t love a jumpsuit?
